The Institute for Public Architecture and the Film-Makers' Cooperative present "Mutualism," a program of fifteen short films screening silently and outdoors, each projection powered by solar energy gathered over the course of the day. Mutualism is the ecological term for a relationship in which two species each live better for the other's presence: the bee and the blossom, the fungus threaded through a plant's roots. The program takes that relation as both its subject and its ethic, moving from a sugarcane labyrinth grown on an eroding Louisiana coast, to water running beneath a New York expressway, to a Pacific nation forecast to vanish beneath the sea. Across the selection, small and overlooked lives are held close, and attention itself becomes a form of care. The films reward a slower, closer kind of looking, and together they make the case that mutualism, living so that other lives thrive too, is as much a civic practice as a natural one. Open [Block] House: Tomorrow 12-4pm!!šŸ”ŠšŸ”Š Did you know the IPA runs one of the few architecture-focused creative residencies in the US, and the only overnight arts program on Governors Island? Fellows live at the Block House and are amongst the first to stay overnight on the Island since the Coast Guardā€™s exit in 1996. Once a month, during the duration of the residency program, the Block House opens its doors to the public- allowing visitors to experience the Block House energy firsthand. A home for artists and designers, that operates as a living laboratory for design research and exploration. A place where domestic and artistic life collide. Thank you for joining us on June 16th and June 22nd for the first Modeling Community Visions for a Future Without the BQE (MCV) workshops of 2026 at Pave Academy Charter School @pave_redhook and the Van Alen Institute @van_alen. These workshops ask: What If? What if we didnā€™t have to accept the BQE as a fact of life but a choice to be questioned? What If the future BQE, with freight moved to rail and water, were to become a tree-lined street rather than a six-lane highway that divides and pollutes neighborhoods, what would communities want to do with this newly available ā€˜land bank'?ā€ā  ā  Participants responded by modifying large scale physical models of the urban fabric along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) in Red Hook/Carroll Gardens. Using a removable kit of parts including buildings, landscapes, and alternatives to the highway, residents worked together to design their future neighborhoods. Their proposals included housing typologies at various scales with retail, industry, schools, libraries, and community spaces along tree-lined streets with resilient landscapes. ā  ā  Many thanks to MCV Team Leader, architect and urban designer Marcus Wilford (IPA Fellow, Fall 2020) @marcuswilford and to our generous collaborators at Pave Academy Charter School, Red Hook West Resident Association, and Van Alen Institute for making these workshops accessible and possible!
