We are excited to announce that LCVA will be part of the @whitechapelgallery Backyard Biennial (15 Jul - 06 Sep 2026) this summer as part of the film installation ‘East End Voices’ in the Zilkha Auditorium alongside OITIJ-JO Collective (@oitij_jo) and Four Corners (@fourcornerse2)

LCVA presents 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨, 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙁𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙡: 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙜 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 (1972–1976) which explores the legacy of radical community video and grassroots arts projects in 1970s East London, through the work of the Basement Project, E1 Festival, and Tower Hamlets Arts Project.

The film installation dives into the story of community arts in Tower Hamlets centres on two pioneering initiatives: the Basement Project, founded in 1972, and the Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP), established in 1976. Both groups championed community arts as a form of political action. Rather than seeking inclusion within elite art institutions, they created work by and for the community, valuing the collective act of making beyond the idea of the finished product.

Join us on Thursday, June 18, at 7PM for a special screening of FRAMED YOUTH: REVENGE OF THE TEENAGE PERVERTS + a conversation with Semaj Peltier and Michael Anthony Hall.

Framed Youth: Revenge of the Teenage Perverts (1983) Facilitated by Andy Lipman and Philip Timmons. The Lesbian and Gay Youth Video Project formed in 1982, and about 25 young lesbians and gays made this video about themselves. Jeff Cole, one of the group, explains the process:

“We were challenging the ways that conventional documentary makers were showing lesbians and gay men on television documentaries and so wanted to include ourselves as makers and as subjects, not in any way trying to be balanced.”

Michael Anthony Hall is a Los Angeles-based writer, editor, curator, and founder of Cine Apartamento.

Semaj Peltier is an archivist, curator, and recent graduate of the University of Amsterdam’s Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image program, specializing in lesbian memory practices and avant-garde cinema vessels.

On Thursday 23 April, The Otolith Group (@the_otolith_group) bring the next Library Transmission to our Minassa space. The screening of Tunde’s Film will be the first in the Notes from the London Commune series.

Tunde’s Film follows a group of youths in East London who decide to take matters into their own hands after economic turmoil and persistent police harassment. They form an armed cadre whose first objective is to rob a bank. The drama unfolds on the streets of Tower Hamlets as the racial and social faultlines of 1970s London are set to a Joan Armatrading soundtrack.

The screening will be followed by an in-conversation with film directors Tunde Ikoli and Maggie Pinhorn, series curator James Elsey (@metropessimist) and The Otolith Collective’s Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun.

Notes from the London Commune highlights moments from the pre-history of the liberation of London. The programme envisions the political imagination of black, proletarian, queer radicalisms as the seed, the soil and the star of a London yet to arrive.

With thanks to the London Community Video Archive (@the_lcva)
