Woodbridge, Words & Woodtype - we recently delivered a workshop with art scholars at @woodbridge_schl and were blown away by what they created 🙌

Each student was given a four letter word and asked to find something in their local area that reflected it and then take photos. These images were collaged with screenprinted patterns and our #pawsey woodtype to produce powerful posters on @gfsmithpapers that showcased their word.

Well done to everyone who took part 👏

Every 𝚏𝚘𝚗𝚝 tells a story…

For Ipswich’s next Premier League home game vs Liverpool, we’re proud to present our collab with The Local Type and a design that’s based on almost 60 years of history…

To create our poster The Local Type have handpicked fonts from previous Ipswich v Liverpool matchday programme covers - stretching back to 1968 - before carefully piecing them together to form a stunning typographic design.

It’s a treasure trove of styles that spans generations, evokes nostalgic memories, and shows the rich history of this fixture. Top work.

“Our usual way of finding typography involves visiting the area and taking photos of buildings, signs etc,” the duo, aka Robbie Steer and Billy Fenton said.

“However, for this poster we wanted to explore a new approach and utilise the vibrant graphic history associated with football.

“This gave us the idea of exploring the vibrant designs of previous matchday programmes involving the two teams.

“After much hunting we found programmes of over 20 previous fixtures - from 1968 to Go Bernard’s Call Me Ted illustration from 2024.

“We curated the most interesting characters from each cover, redrew them and created our purely typographic design.”

We love how it’s turned out.

You can pick up an A3 print of the design for your wall for just £16.50, along with a certificate listing all of the programme covers that feature in the artwork.

Large versions will also be on display in windows around the town centre thanks to Ipswich Central and @allaboutipswich

A poster and a fixture for Ipswich fans to look forward to.

𝙹𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝖔𝖚𝖗 🅃🅈🄿🄴…

Our poster for Ipswich’s next home game vs @liverpoolfc comes via the wonderfully creative partnership known as The Local Type @the_localtype

Graphic designers Robbie Steer and Billy Fenton have always had a mutual love of letters and print and started The Local Type in 2024.

Since then they’ve been scouring towns and cities to uncover overlooked typography while learning more about the social history of a place.

Their recent exhibition at @suffolkarchives showcased their skill at bringing all this together and creating very cool pieces of art.

“Two of our greatest passions are design and football and we love our local area, hence starting The Local Type,” they said.

“So when Call Me Ted reached out asking us if we’d like to collaborate, and already aware of the great work by previous artists, we had no hesitation in saying yes.

“It’s an honour for us to become part of this wonderful project that celebrates all that is great about Ipswich and football - community, creativity and characters.”

The feeling is mutual.

Come back tomorrow to see The Local Type’s design, which will be for sale on our website and also posted around the town centre thanks to the help of Ipswich Central @allaboutipswich

ABC on the BBC…

The Local Type’s project with the graphic design students from the University of Suffolk (@uniofsuffolk), ‘A Brief History of Type: Ipswich’ is in the news!

We were interviewed by George King (@georgehenryking) of @bbcsuffolk about the project and exhibition currently being displayed The Hold in Ipswich.

Tutor, Srin Surti said: “(The project) speaks about the visibility and invisibility of history and how it is embedded in our traces in the built environment. It was about getting the students to think about how they could retain that richness of the image but add that communicative potential of type with it. I think it’s got a lot of visual impact - the relationship between the colour, the design, and the history of the location is really interesting.”

Thanks again to all the @uosgraphicdesign students and tutors plus the @suffolkarchives Lucy Wall for their support with bringing The Local Type’s idea to life.

Click on the link in our story to listen to or read the full article.

The exhibition continues until Monday 30th June – where you can also buy one of our new Ipswich prints. taken in Ipswich, Suffolk by @the_localtype

This week we had the pleasure of opening our exhibition ‘A Brief History of Type: Ipswich’ at the @suffolkarchives.

FREE to visit until 30th June!

The exhibition showcases our collaboration with the @uosgraphicdesign course. We challenged the graphic design and illustration students to design an A-Z of typographic posters, which combined found type with history, stories and forgotten tales of the local area.

Each poster was printed by the students in the university’s incredible print room, with the advice, guidance and patience of their resident print master, Glen.

Additionally, we have also curated a display of artefacts and print ephemera to highlight F. G. Pawsey, a prominent printer and stationery merchants who once operated throughout Suffolk with premises in Bury St. Edmunds and latterly Ipswich. For this we must thank Nicola Pawsey and her sister for allowing us the opportunity to shine a light their father’s extraordinary objects.

We’d like to thank: @_nigelball, @v_tzomaka, @_janehackett, @srinsurti, Glen, Lucy at @suffolkarchives, @uosgraphicdesign, @uniofsuffolk and @gfsmithpapers for kindly donating the paper.
This exhibition would not have been possible without you!

The Local Type have been busy over the last couple of months discovering more historic typography in new locations and turning them into beautiful screenprints, on stunning stock by @gfsmithpapers and @gmundpaper

We’ll be selling these and much more at the @stbridefoundation Wayzgoose this Sunday 10 May from 11-4.

If you’re the local type and are in the area, come and say hello, and pick up a print or two!

There may even be the odd historical story to share, uncovered through the letters we’ve found and the people we’ve met along the way.

See you there!
Billy & Robbie
