Sometimes we go looking everywhere outside ourselves for the answer.

Something concrete we can name.

Something we can fix.

I think we do this because going inside—to name and discover what we may already know—can feel unsafe.

It might mean we have to change something about a life we’ve learned to rely on and trust.

I’ve seen this in business. I’ve seen it in life. And I’ve done it myself more times than I can count.

We ask one more person.

We gather one more opinion.

We wait for a little more certainty.

But sometimes clarity doesn’t come from finding the right answer.

It comes from finally being willing to listen to the one you already have.

And I think that starts with believing that you—and this one life you’ve been given—are worth it.

That’s where the first step begins.

Learning to lead yourself takes intentionality. ✨

But I didn’t create a framework and then live by it. I lived my life—and, looking back, realized there had been a process guiding me all along.

It’s the same process I’ve used for more than 20 years to help organizations grow. 📈 And it turns out those principles don’t just apply to businesses. They apply to people, too.

By reverse-engineering my own journey, I created 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: a methodology and roadmap for leading yourself toward more.

Hey friends! Welcome to The Misty Effect. I’m Misty, and here’s my story.

I spent twenty-two years building a company I loved. I was the president and majority owner, and for a long time that career was the center of everything.
Then I made some decisions that changed all of it. I fell in love, the business chapter came to an end, and I found myself rebuilding a life from scratch, which turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me, even though it sure didn’t feel that way at first.

Somewhere in all of that, I learned the thing I can’t stop talking about now: the life you build only works if it’s actually yours.

So that’s what this space is. Honest reflections and real conversations, from someone who’s walked through her own “what’s next” and came out the other side.

Maybe you’re there too. A role ending, a season closing, a life that followed all the right steps but somehow doesn’t feel like yours.

If that’s you, you’re exactly who I’m here for. I can’t wait to get to know you.

Sending love,

One of the exercises I’ve used in my work is simple: make a list of the people and things you’re prioritizing right now.

Your work.
Your family.
Your relationships.
Your responsibilities.
Your goals.

Maybe even the things you do because you’ve always done them.

Then ask yourself:

What am I giving here? And what am I getting in return?

It’s amazing what you can see when you actually put it all in front of you.

Sometimes we discover that our lives are reflecting exactly what matters to us.

And sometimes we discover a gap.

Something we say is important isn’t getting much of our time. Something that used to matter is taking up more space than it should. Or maybe we’ve gotten really good at investing in everyone and everything around us while quietly putting ourselves at the bottom of the list.

That’s not a reason to judge yourself.

It’s an opportunity to notice.

Because investing in yourself starts with knowing where you are spending your energy — and deciding whether that’s where you want it to go.

So take a look.

Where is your time and energy going? And what would change if you made yourself a little more of a priority?

That might be the beginning of something important.

And sometimes, the first step toward what’s next is simply choosing to invest in yourself. by @the_mistyeffect

My latest newsletter just went out. 💌

This one is honest.

I wrote about what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan—and what the past few exhausting months have taught me about family, setbacks, and continuing to show up.

I also shared a little about my keynote in Mexico, the questions that stayed with me afterward, and “the gap”—that messy space between knowing something needs to change and figuring out what comes next.

And I keep coming back to one question:

What are you not testing or trying at this stage of your life?

Sometimes, you don’t need all the answers. You just need to take the next step and trust that, even if things turn out differently than you hoped, you’ll still be okay.

Before I left Simantel, I made a clear decision: to grow. And not just grow. Scale.

Because the two philosophies are different.

I was ready for exponential growth. Growth that would allow us to sustain the business we had built to date — but take it somewhere new. A new engine. 🚀

We explored a lot of ideas. New targets. New products. New possibilities.

But what was so exciting to me wasn’t the tactic. It was the strategy behind it.

The idea that setting a goal so big — an impossible one — changes the way your brain has been trained to work.

Even though we were growing substantially year over year (thankfully!), we forced ourselves to explore the possibilities of 10x growth. What would it mean to raise our floor? What would it mean to treat time as a tool, rather than simply something we use to assess history?

What are the things we could confidently walk across as a bridge to that future?

It was a thrilling time, and one that changed me personally. And now, as I launch this new chapter as a founder, I find myself using those same principles to think about what I’m building next.

And this guy, Josh White was the best coach I could have had for that work. 🙌
I encourage you to listen to this program from Scaling.com and co-founders Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Blake Erickson.

If you’re a business owner or a leader, I think you’re going to take something from this.

A few years ago, my counselor helped me find something I'd buried. Something had happened, and at the time, I'd covered it up. Kept moving. Kept functioning.

Kept going.

She described the work as removing a splinter.

The splinter had been there for a long time. I didn't walk around thinking about it every day. In fact, I'd gotten pretty good at living around it.

But that didn't mean it wasn't there. It meant I'd learned how not to touch it.
And maybe that's what we do more often than we realize.

We don't always lose touch with what we know. Sometimes we learn how to avoid touching it.

We cover it with achievement, responsibility… with being needed. We cover it with keeping everyone else comfortable. We cover it with one more accomplishment, one more explanation, one more reason why everything is fine.
The covering can be protective.

Sometimes we needed it. But eventually, there comes a point when the thing protecting us from the pain also keeps us from healing the thing underneath it.

And that's where naming matters. Not because naming magically fixes anything. But because you can't begin to tend to a splinter you won't admit is there.

Sometimes the first courageous thing isn't changing your life. It's simply saying: There it is.

I know it's there. I've known for a while.

And maybe I'm finally ready to stop walking around it, and walk toward it. by @the_mistyeffect

I'm looking for 30 people who have made a significant change in their life because the life they had built stopped feeling like theirs.

I'm starting a research project, and I'm hoping you'll help me.

Maybe you left a career that looked successful on paper. Maybe you sold a business. Maybe you walked away from a relationship, moved across the country, changed your priorities, or simply realized that the definition of success you'd been chasing wasn't yours anymore.

I'm interested in what happens after that realization. Because I've lived some version of this myself. And the more I've thought about it, the more curious I've become about how other people navigate that moment.

So I'm looking for 30 people for a 30-minute conversation. No preparation. No polished success story required. I'm interested in the messy middle.

I want to hear:

• When did you realize the life you'd built no longer felt like yours?

• What kept you stuck?

• What finally made you move?

• What did you do about it?

• What did you lose? What did you gain?

• What surprised you?

• What did "starting over" actually look like?

• What happened after you took the scary step?

• And what do you wish someone had told you before you did it?

I'm especially interested in people who have made a meaningful change in their career, business, relationships, location, identity, priorities—or some combination of those things.

And I'm not looking for people who have it all figured out. Some of the most interesting stories may belong to people who are still figuring it out.

If this is a story you've lived—or someone immediately comes to mind—send me a DM.

I'm genuinely curious about what I'll learn.

And, I'm pretty sure I'll learn something about myself along the way, too. by @the_mistyeffect

The first step in The Misty Effect framework is simple:

Mine your story.

Not because you’re trying to fix it.
Because you’re trying to appreciate it.

Look back at your life with compassion and curiosity. Notice the moments when some part of you already knew what you know now—even if you weren’t ready to listen yet.

Maybe it was 20 years ago. Maybe it was three.

What did you once know about yourself that you set aside?

And what might be worth resurfacing now, as you decide what’s next? by @the_mistyeffect

One of the reasons I’m so drawn to @wirth_while is our shared value of being ruthlessly competitive—with ourselves.

So when I asked him about failure, his answer didn’t surprise me.

First, he didn’t really answer the question.

Because neither of us fully believes you can fail. There’s always something to learn, something to try again, something to make better.

But then he said something that really stuck with me:

He has a sense in his body of what is good.

Not what’s good by someone else’s standards.

His standards.

And that, my friends, is a man you can fall in love with over and over again.

Because he trusts his own intuition.

His creativity.

His instincts.

His power.

And I think that’s one of the most attractive things a person can do:

Know what you know—and trust yourself enough to follow it.

We talked about this—and a whole lot more—in our latest episode of The Misty Effect podcast.

Some beginnings feel planned. Others just seem to happen at exactly the right time.

On September 23, I’ll be in Mexico City at the @_aminworldwide conference, sharing Unmistakably Yours for the first time with a community of people I’ve known, trusted, and admired for years.

The theme of this year’s conference is new beginnings — which feels pretty perfect given where I am right now.

This keynote has been a long time coming. It’s about what happens when the life we’ve built starts to feel a little less like our own, and what it takes to recognize what we already know, trust ourselves, and have the courage to lead what’s next.

And I’m feeling that theme in my own life, too.

A new keynote.
A new chapter in my work.
A new chapter in my life.

There’s something really special about getting to premiere Unmistakably Yours with people who have been part of my story for so long.

Mexico City. September 23.

I can’t wait. ❤️ by @the_mistyeffect
