I think I have struggled with this over the last few years, being hyperaware of the climate of the world. Not that I was never aware, but the apparent and visceral dehumanization of it all has left me mentally exhausted, with everything else seeming trivial. Although I have continued to make strides in my own life and circle, I do not think invisibility is the solution. I think representation of the good may be part of it. Michelle Obama frames it this way: it is possible to live on two planes at once, to have one’s feet planted in reality but pointed in the direction of progress.

Well, hello world. You’ll be seeing more of me ♥️ by @the_modelscientist

I hate clichés, but I’ll use one this time to express my gratitude.

A week before the New York Marathon, just minutes after shopping for running gear, I was rear-ended off the road in a car accident. It was terrifying, unexpected, and life-altering. For months, I had been training for the marathon while juggling a full-time PhD program. I trained through sickness, sleepless nights, stress, holidays, exams, and even injuries. Nothing, however, prepared me for the aftermath of the accident.

My first question to the doctor was, “Will I be able to run the New York Marathon in a week?”

When I entered the lottery for the marathon, I never expected to get in, let alone commit to running it. But over the course of my training, it became more than just a race. It was my battleground—a reflection of my journey, me versus myself.

Despite the accident, when race day arrived, there was no way I wasn’t going to run. The marathon turned out to be one of the hardest days of my life. At one point, I wanted to quit. I hadn’t realized how much the accident had affected me, making the challenge even greater. But with strength from God and the unwavering support of my family and friends, I crossed the finish line.

Still, I felt unsatisfied with my performance. I thought, “That was a failure. I could’ve done better.” I was so hard on myself, and looking back, I realize how foolish that mindset was.

Life isn’t linear, and even the best preparation can’t guarantee a smooth path. Things can change in an instant. I’m learning to appreciate that truth. Above all, I’m grateful to be alive by the grace of God.

I don’t know when I’ll fully be ready to run again, but I’m thankful for another chance to try. As 2025 begins, I can’t help but feel a bubbly excitement. Life is a mystery, but one thing I know for sure: God is good. by @the_modelscientist
