🇳🇱 Aan het einde van onze vakantie hebben we een uitje gedaan naar het Viru moeras. Het ligt in het Lahemaa Nationaal Park en vanuit Tallinn ben je er met een uurtje in de bus. Je loopt er kilometers over planken, omdat je anders wegzakt in het drassige hoogveen en natte kakkies haalt. We kwamen Esten tegen met grote witte emmers, die zeiden dat ze veenbessen gingen plukken op hun “geheime” plek. Ik had graag meegedaan, wanneer ik net als zij rubberen laarzen had gedragen. Het was een mistige dag, wat sfeervolle plaatjes opleverde. Is het niet prachtig al dat rood gekleurde veenmos?

🇬🇧 At the end of our holiday, we took a trip to the Viru Bog. It is located in Lahemaa National Park and can be reached from Tallinn by bus in about an hour. You walk for kilometers along wooden boardwalks; otherwise, you would sink into the soggy raised bog and end up with wet feet. We ran into some Estonians carrying large white buckets who said they were off to pick cranberries at their “secret” spot. I would have loved to join them, had I been wearing rubber boots like they were. It was a misty day, which made for some atmospheric images. Isn’t all that red-colored peat moss beautiful?

🇳🇱 Onze vakantie had Tallinn als eindbestemming. De Estse hoofdstad heeft een prachtig oud centrum, dat Unesco Werelderfgoed is. Het is de best bewaarde middeleeuwse stad van Noord-Europa, compleet met muren, poorten, 26 wachttorens, kerken, koopmanshuizen en overal straten met kinderkopjes.

We bezochten er kerken, musea en buiten de stad een merkwaardig kerkhof voor Sovjet beelden, zoals koppen van Lenin, een Stalin en andere Sovjet helden, die met de Estse onafhankelijkheid uit het straatbeeld verwijderd zijn.

🇬🇧 Our holiday had Tallinn as its final destination. The Estonian capital boasts a beautiful old town that is a Unesco World Heritage site. It is the best-preserved medieval city in Northern Europe, complete with walls, gates, 26 watchtowers, churches, merchant houses and cobblestone streets throughout.

We visited churches and museums there, as well as a peculiar cemetery outside the city for Soviet statues, such as heads of Lenin, a Stalin, and other Soviet heroes, that were removed from public spaces following Estonia’s independence.

🇳🇱 Nagenieten van de vakantie. Vanuit Cēsis in Letland zijn we met de trein aanbeland in Estland en wel in de universiteitsstad Tartu. Daar moesten we natuurlijk de botanische tuin zien. Ook het moderne en goede Nationaal Museum van Estland is er gevestigd. Het verhuisde in 2016 naar dit 350 meter lange glazen gebouw, neergezet over een startbaan van een voormalig Sovjet vliegveld. Gedurende de Duitse en Russische bezettingen is een groot deel van de museumcollectie verstopt geweest in woningen en kantoren in en rond Tartu. De traditionele Estse achtpuntige ster, eigenlijk een heilig zonnesymbool, beschermt en brengt geluk. De glazen wanden van het museum staan er vol mee. En ik wil die prachtige trui ermee!

🇬🇧 Reminiscing the holiday. From Cēsis in Latvia, we traveled by train to Estonia, specifically to the university city of Tartu. Naturally, we had to see the botanical garden. The modern and excellent Estonian National Museum is also located there. It moved in 2016 into this 350-meter-long glass building, constructed over the runway of a former Soviet airfield. During the German and Russian occupations, a large part of the museum’s collection was hidden in homes and offices in and around Tartu. The traditional Estonian eight-pointed star, actually a sacred sun symbol, protects and brings good luck. The museum’s glass walls are covered in them. And I want that beautiful sweater featuring them!

🇳🇱 Vanuit de Letse hoofdstad Riga hebben we de trein genomen naar Sigulda, dat in het Gauja Nationaal Park ligt, genoemd naar de rivier die er doorheen stroomt. Een prachtig gebied, dat voor de Letten synoniem is met de perfecte herfst. Later in oktober gaat heel het land erheen. Al moesten de bossen nog helemaal op kleur komen, het was wel nog lekker rustig. Ook verbleven we in Cēsis, een plaats meer noordelijk in het gebied, voor we de grens met Estland overstaken. Het valt ons op, dat er in Letland hier en daar een kist appels aan de straat staat om van te nemen. Waar je ook komt, overal zie je afgeladen bomen met ook veel appels eronder liggend.

🇬🇧 From the Latvian capital, Riga, we took the train to Sigulda, located in Gauja National Park, named after the river that flows through it. It is a beautiful area that, for Latvians, is synonymous with the perfect autumn. Later in October, the whole country flocks there. Although the foliage had not yet fully turned, the area was pleasantly quiet at the time. We also stayed in Cēsis, a town further north in the region, before crossing the border into Estonia. We noticed that, here and there in Latvia, crates of apples are left by the roadside for people to help themselves. Wherever you go, you see trees heavy with fruit, with plenty of apples lying on the ground beneath them as well.

🇳🇱 Op de Centrale Markt van Riga, bestaande uit vijf enorme hallen en een buitenterrein. De grootste markt van Europa en Unesco Werelderfgoed. De hallen waren oorspronkelijk Duitse zeppelin hangars, maar in de jaren 20 zijn ze in art deco stijl omgebouwd tot destijds de grootste en modernste markt van de wereld. Je kijkt er je ogen uit. Opvallend voor ons zijn de kramen gespecialiseerd in honing. De mooi versierde Russische pasteien. De ruime sortering aan kaviaar en visproducten. De hoeveelheid en lage prijs van paddenstoelen, met name cantharellen. Kramen met alleen maar allerlei soorten zuurgoed en inmaak, waaronder ook weer paddenstoelen. Enorme bossen dille. En hoera, in een van de hallen is ook een food court rond een plein vol tafels.

🇬🇧 At Riga’s Central Market, which comprises five enormous halls and an outdoor area. It is Europe’s largest market and a Unesco World Heritage site. The halls were originally German zeppelin hangars, but in the 1920s, they were converted into what was then the world’s largest and most modern market, featuring an Art Deco style. It is a feast for the eyes. Stalls specializing in honey stand out to us, as do the beautifully decorated Russian pastries and the wide selection of caviar and fish products. We are struck by the abundance and low prices of mushrooms, especially chanterelles. There are stalls dedicated entirely to various types of pickles and preserves, including once again: mushrooms. Huge bunches of dill. And hooray, one of the halls features a food court centered around a plaza filled with tables.

🇳🇱 Een van de hoogtepunten van een bezoek aan Riga, de hoofdstad van Letland, zijn de honderden Art Nouveau gebouwen die de stad heeft. De meest spectaculaire liggen aan de Alberta iela en de Elizabetes iela. In deze wijk ligt ook de Russische ambassade. Alledrie de Baltische Staten laten overal (teksten op het openbaar vervoer, met vlaggen) hun steun aan Oekraïne zien. Het stukje straat waaraan de ambassade ligt is sinds de oorlog met Oekraïne omgedoopt in: Ukrainas Neatkarības iela, oftewel Onafhankelijk Oekraïne straat. De Russen zien nu steeds die straatnaam op de poststukken staan en op het straatnaambord. Bovendien kijken ze dagelijks uit op een enorm billboard op het gebouw recht tegenover de ambassade (zie foto). Tot slot een Stalinistische kolos die in 1958 de bezetting in Riga is neergezet, naar voorbeeld van bekende gebouwen in Moskou. De Letten noemen het de verjaardagstaart van Stalin.

🇬🇧 One of the highlights of a visit to Riga, the capital of Latvia, is the city’s hundreds of Art Nouveau buildings. The most spectacular ones are located on Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela. The Russian embassy is also situated in this district. All three Baltic states display their support for Ukraine everywhere through signage on public transport and the flying of flags. Since the war in Ukraine began, the stretch of street where the embassy is located has been renamed Ukrainas Neatkarības iela, or Independent Ukraine Street. The Russians now constantly see this street name on their mail and on the street sign itself. Moreover, every day they look out onto a massive billboard on the building directly opposite the embassy (see photo). Finally, a Stalinist colossus erected in Riga in 1958 during the occupation, modeled after well known buildings in Moscow. Latvians call it Stalin’s birthday cake.
