🤍Three-month Booksta-versary🤍

Yesterday marked three months of The Reading Ranch so naturally, it felt like the time to reveal the deeply serious inspiration behind the name.

There are three key inspiration ingredients, and let’s just say some are more respectable than others 😂😂

So now I need to know: what unnecessarily specific thing are you weirdly passionate about? Or, is there a special meaning behind your account name?

And on a serious note, thanks to all of you that have made me feel so welcome here! Here’s to embracing our weird bits and creating a community where we can all be entirely ourselves. No matter how strange 😂 Thank you for being here for the chaos 🤍

While I’ll read most romance and fantasy, there are definitely a few tropes that will have me immediately adding a book to my TBR (and a few that I’ll approach with caution 😅)

Cowboy romance? Yes please!
Enemies-to-lovers? Always.
Unique magic systems? Inject them straight into my veins.

What books nailed these tropes for you? Drop your recs below - especially your underrated faves!

A little guide to the genres you’ll find at The Reading Ranch 📚🤠

Romance, fantasy and all the way those worlds collide are my bread and butter, with occasional thriller or contemporary fiction thrown in as palate cleansers.

I love stories that completely sweep me away, whether that’s through big feelings, unforgettable characters or immersive world-building.

So if that sounds like you, you’re in the right place!

I’m always looking for lesser-known gems, so tell me — what’s one underrated book in any of these genres that you think more people should be reading?

AUTUMN QUEST NO. 4: BUY A SEASONAL BOOKMARK

Look at this beauty!! 🍁 I love the colours and how pretty it looks against the pages as I work my way through my autumnal TBR.

QOTD: when a book comes with its own playlist, do you actually listen to it while reading? Do you have it on in the background for the vibes, listen before or after reading, or not bother at all? 🎶 taken in BOOKSTA by @the_reading_ranch

Book lovers: add this one to your bookish bucket list 📚🌎

Tell me The Long Room at Trinity College Dublin doesn’t look like somewhere you’d stumble across in a fantasy novel?

Towering bookshelves, beautiful architecture and gorgeously atmospheric. I spend so much time exploring fictional worlds, so it’s lovely to find real places that feel just as magical.

Save this for your next trip to Dublin and let me know what other libraries deserve a spot on my bucket list? by @the_reading_ranch

A little more cowboy, a little less slump 🤠

September wasn’t a reading slump in the usual sense. I was still reading a lot, but I didn’t love much of what I finished, and by the end of the month I felt like I’d lost a little of my reading sparkle.

So, this month, I’m going back to one of my favourite genres in the hope of reigniting it: cowboy romance 🤠

I’m still reading other things (including some suitably seasonal reads), but my TBR is getting a healthy injection of chaps, Stetsons, horses and drawls. For science purposes, obviously.

These macarons were bought for me by my niece, who is fourteen 🥹, and their pastel colours practically demanded a photo alongside the Wells Ranch series by Bailey Hannah. I’m hoping to finally dive into these (the books that is, the macarons are already gone!) this month, and honestly, how beautiful do they all look together?

But more importantly, how sweet is my niece for thinking of me? Both my sisters and their husbands are doing a brilliant job of raising such wonderful humans, and I feel very lucky to be their aunt 🤎

⭐️ FIVE STAR FRIDAY: BONFIRE & BLISS BOOKSTORE ⭐️

I bought Darling Daffodils Farm by Brittanee Nicole, the first book in this series, while I was on holiday in New Orleans earlier this year, which means I have the US cover and US-sized edition. And there was absolutely no way I was going to have two books from the same series sitting on my shelf at completely different heights. 😂

So a big shout out and thank you to my incredible friend @mcnerdy27 for sending me a copy of this across the pond. ❤️

Then I re-discovered the best thing about American editions: the floppy paperback.

It is genuinely so rare to find this kind of binding in the UK, where books actually open wide without feeling like you’re about to crack the spine in half. It makes reading so much more enjoyable.

And thankfully, the book itself was just as enjoyable. I loved it even more than the first, and now I’m wildly excited for the next one!

Are your five-star ratings reserved for objectively brilliant books, or are you also a vibes-based five-star reviewer? And while we’re at, what was your last five-star read?

CURRENTLY READING: RYDER, JESSICA PETERSON 🤠📖

I’m so excited to finally be reading the last book in the Lucky River Ranch series. I absolutely raced through the first four because I couldn’t get enough, so naturally I was very keen to get my hands on this one.

It was a little more than I’d usually pay for a paperback so I’ve been putting it off, but decided to treat myself and bought it recently. And since I was treating myself to the book, I figured I might as well go all in and add a couple of other treats I don’t indulge in very often.

Rio is something I usually only get when I’m at the fish and chip shop, and this maple pecan doughnut immediately reminded me of one of my favourite sweet treats that I only really get when I’m in the US: pecan pie.

So that’s my current reading set-up: cowboy romance, a fizzy drink and something sweet. Plus, one of my favourite Cody Johnson songs which I think works perfectly for this story!

What are you reading right now, and are you enjoying it? Or what’s a treat that you don’t regularly indulge in?

BOOK VS. MOVIE: VERITY

I was very intrigued to see how this one would translate to screen because Verity was such a compulsive read for me.

Unfortunately, the movie didn’t quite have the same effect!

I went to the cinema with two friends, one who has read the book and one who hasn’t. We all came out of the movie with the same verdict: it was a bit rubbish! We then had to apologise profusely to the friend that we’d convinced to come along on the strength of our glowing book reviews 😂

QOTD: Do you plan to see this one? Did you get consumed by the Colleen Hoover hype a few years ago?

🍁 AUTUMN QUEST NO. 3 — SHELFIE SUNDAY DECORATING 🍁

The next task in my Quest for Autumnal Joy was obviously to make my home look as autumnal as possible.

Have I achieved cosy bookshop/library vibes?

Or have I simply covered everything in fake leaves and pumpkins?

I’ll let you decide 😂

Either way, I have to admit that it has made me a little bit happier at the thought of staying inside more in the coming months.

QOTD: Are you an autumn decorator, or do you leave your home exactly as it is year-round? Show me photos please!

✅ 2026 Reading Goal: Complete ✅

As a big Formula 1 fan, I’ve been desperate to use this audio for something, and accidentally hitting my reading goal for the year with 90+ days to go definitely qualified 😂

I always like having a goal, just because I enjoy working towards something and getting that little dopamine rush when I finally hit it. In hindsight, “pacing myself” may have been a generous interpretation of what I was doing though!

But in general, I don’t really judge my reading year by the numbers. I’m not interested in turning reading into a productivity metric. Some years I’ll read loads, some years less, and neither really tells me whether it was a good reading year or not.

Do you set reading goals, or just go with the flow? And if you do finish early do you change the goalposts or just view whatever is left as no pressure reading time?

📚 September Recap 📚

Honestly, I felt very lacklustre about my reading this month. I didn’t get captivated by many of the books and I had quite a few disappointments.

Noteworthy thoughts:

- I enjoyed Six of Crows, but after seeing so many rave reviews, was pretty disappointed. It didn’t blow me away. I read it early in the month and am yet to pick up the sequel which is telling.
- Bourbon & Lies was delicious on audio and I can’t wait to hear the other Bourbon Boys stories.
- Yes, Chef was a pleasant surprise. I picked it up for 99p on Kindle as an easy read that wouldn’t consume me on a work trip and ended up really enjoying Jack and Poppy’s story.

I hope to jumpstart myself out of this dip in October with a few much anticipated reads and some cowboy romance - always a win for me 🤠

QOTD: I’ve been craving a good supernatural romance so was very disappointed by the ones I read in Sept - what’s your best recommendation in that genre? Or, what was your best read in September?
