On Friday, Abraham Ranch was contacted about 5 goats that were displaced by a barn fire the day before. They have a family who loves them dearly but needed temporary housing for them in this unexpected disaster. We are so grateful to be able to step up and help when we can! They are being quarantined in our largest chicken coop currently and are enjoying the beauty of our first snow storm of the year.

Get your tissues handy because the story of Bruce is a happy tear jerker. Bruce, Tony, Clark and Peter arrived at the ranch in June from an animal cruelty and neglect case. They were terrified of people at first but soon learned to trust and to love snuggles. In August, Bruce developed a noticeable lump on his side, so we took him to MSU. They discovered that he had an internal abscess that was the result of a prior injury that never healed properly on the inside and did surgery to drain the abscess. When he came home, we had to flush the wound daily for several weeks and give him antibiotics. Despite what was going on with his body, Bruce continued to be a happy, active and loving boy. Unfortunately, he did not respond to the antibiotics over the course of two months and the abscess continued to grow. We took him back to MSU for an evaluation in early November. When the veterinarians opened him up, they discovered his infection was too close to his organs, and he needed a CT scan. It was determined he not only needed surgery to remove 3 ribs, 50% of one of his lungs, and the tissue surrounding his heart, but also extensive post-operative wound care requiring at least 3 weekly sedations. Fortunately, one of the MSU veterinarians that had been caring for him had fallen in love with him. She decided to adopt him and proceed with the life saving measures necessary, including performing the surgery herself. Bruce survived the surgery and the initial recovery and is doing great. He spent 26 days in the hospital. Now he gets to go to work daily with his mom Dr. Vanderbroek at the MSU large animal clinic and is doted on by all the staff. After everything Bruce has been through, we are so happy he has such a special happy ending. Thank you to the incredible team at MSU who went above and beyond and treat all our animals like their own! ❤️

On June 30th, Detroit Mounted Police brought 2 horses that had been found abandoned in Detroit. They were so emaciated that they were on the brink of death and they had wounds that needed attention. They needed a special feeding schedule that consisted of soaked hay pellets every 3-4 hours around the clock for the first 10 days. The team took turns attending to them throughout the night and slowly nursed them back to health. Tim and Jim, as we call them, are now doing great and are available for adoption. We are so proud of these sweet boys who fought to have a better chapter in life. And thank you to the @mhumane team and Abraham Ranch team for their dedication, sleepless nights and immeasurable compassion! While we wish we could have shared more about Tim and Jim’s journey from the beginning, we cannot share information about animals who are part of ongoing investigations.

Which version of you is Gracie embodying? Leaving work on a Friday, heading to girls’ night out, running to rescue another animal, just saw a spider, catching the doors opening on Black Friday, or something else?! 🤣

Gracie is still available for adoption, and is a great trail horse!

New rescue alert: Luna is a 9 year American Mini Pig who came to us 3 weeks ago after her owner passed away. While she was likely very loved, her living situation was quite sad, and she is very afraid of people she doesn’t know. Her hooves hadn’t been trimmed…maybe ever…and it will take a while to get her feet on good shape. She barely ate for the first three days she was here, and we gave her as much space as possible to let her settle. Last week, we took her to MSU Veterinary Hospital where they sedated her, trimmed her hooves, vaccinated her and cleaned her skin as best they could. She is still in quarantine but she now lets Annika pet her and is starting to have a much bigger appetite. We look forward to continuing to see Luna flourish and come out of her shell.

Clyde is really not a fan of the monthly tornado siren test (listen with sound on from the start). Bonnie tries to be supportive and affectionate but then tells him to pull it together. 😂❤️

Penelope is a friendly 6 year old American Guinea Hog who came to the ranch in 2022. She was initially up for adoption when she first came, but the right home never came along and Penelope doesn’t see or hear very well. She’s gotten very used to her home here at the ranch, so she became an Abraham Ranch Ambassador and is loved by all. Penelope shows her appreciation by using her favorite people as a scratching post. She’s a silly girl who snores like a banshee, and we’re so glad we get to give her a safe and happy forever home.

Garth, Elvis, Dolly, Marvin and Reba really enjoy each other’s company. They also enjoy watching and judging all others at the ranch. 😂❤️

Available for Adoption:
Libby is a 3 year old Nubian or Nubian mix goat who is looking for her forever home. In her prior home, she lived with chickens and didn’t have any goat friends. She’s hoping to be adopted to a home with at least one other large goat. Please contact us if you’re interested in learning more about Libby.
