As much as we say we're here to entertain - which we are - nobody can shy away from the fact that cinema is the most influential tool that exists. 'Ladki ki naa mein haan chhipi hoti hai' is something that cinema of the 80s and 90s corrupted an entire generation with. So what exactly is the responsibility of a creator in 2024 then? A quick snapshot from an interesting conversation with my peers at @iwmbuzz fest.

Is protesting against the government a threat to democracy, or democracy in action?

Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance, revisits the prosecution of anti-Vietnam War protesters in 1968.

As debates around protest restrictions, dissent and freedom of expression continue in India, this film raises questions that feel especially relevant today.

When did asking the government questions and critical thinking become a crime?

Films You Should Watch / Books You Should Read In India Today Part 1.

George Orwell's 1984, written in 1949, adapted by Micheal Radford in 1984, paints a dystopian world which seems heartbreakingly real in India today.
Watch the film, read the book. Read books. In the end, thoughts will save us.

George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1949. Almost eight decades later, its ideas about propaganda, brainwashing, surveillance and political power remain disturbingly relevant.

Big Brother. Doublespeak. The Thought Police. A government that rewrites history and demands absolute loyalty.

Does Orwell's world feel a little too familiar today?
And a humble appeal - please read. Read what matters.

A 40-year-old murder mystery. A forgotten actress. And a clue hidden in Malayalam cinema history. 🎬

What makes Rekhachithram so fascinating isn't just its suspense. It's how the film blends alternate history, metafiction and a real Mammootty film, Kathodu Kathoram (1985), into a fictional murder investigation.

Have you watched it?

5 movie quotes that might change the way you see life. 🎬

What do movies teach us about love, heartbreak, self-worth, truth and letting go?

From “We accept the love we think we deserve” in The Perks of Being a Wallflower to “You can’t handle the truth!” in A Few Good Men, some movie dialogues hit uncomfortably close to home.

5 powerful lines from Memento, Brokeback Mountain, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, A Few Good Men and Fight Club.

Which movie quote has stayed with you?

A writer’s brain has one problem: everything starts looking like plot.
An unanswered message becomes foreshadowing. A weird interaction needs a motive. A silence must mean something.

You spend your life thinking about storytelling, cause and effect and character behaviour, and then accidentally apply it to real life.

Not everything is foreshadowing. Sometimes Tuesday was just weird.

Imagine spending 28 years doing your job and suddenly realising you might be one of the bad guys.

That’s where George Cloony starrer Michael Clayton begins. And the way writer-director Tony Gilroy shoots that opening tells you so much about the film: people talk, a lot, but the images keep revealing what their words can’t.

There’s something beautiful about stories. Sometimes they find their way into the world even when the person who first dreamt them isn’t around to see it.

Chintu Aur Chicken was originally written by Surendra Dubey - Suri to his friends. @vermasunayana and @ankanajoshi carried his story forward, and somewhere along the way, we at Oye Patram, got to be a part of the journey. And today, it’s finally out there, finding its audience. On PinkvillaBuzz.

Maybe that’s one of the quiet miracles of storytelling. A dream can live longer than the dreamer.

This one’s for Suri. ❤️ by @thealkaholicspirit
