There is a line in Steel Magnolias where Truvy says about Ruth Robeline, “Her whole life has been an experiment in terror.” I think about it all the time, probably because my life has been an experiment in love.
On June 18th, my mom had a massive stroke. After spending the weekend orchestrating the digging-out of my cursed/still-unfinished patio, playing a few rounds of bridge, taking my daughter to the mall, and pep-talking her oldest grandson through his first post-college job search, she entered the hospital and hasn’t been home since. This has also been an experiment in love—these six months of watching and waiting for things to shake out, sift, and become what they will finally be. Who she will be. It’s part art and part science and none of us knows what the next step is other than to watch for signs of the slow progress we were pitched, but not promised. Bringing her home for Christmas wasn’t promised, either, but when you can’t find a transport service that operates on holidays, I guess you just buy a wheelchair-accessible van and some ramps online?! Another kind of experiment.
I would love for my mom to hold me, or call to say she’ll be a few minutes late because she missed her exit trying to find a Tim Horton’s. She is my target audience and the bright heart of our family. Once, when I was in high school and she was doing something brave like opening a business in a town she’d only been to once, I missed her so badly that I sprayed my room with her perfume, called long distance on the landline and begged her to stay on the phone all night with me, and she did, at least until I fell asleep. All I remember is waking up, knowing she’d been with me all night. All along. She’s with me, still. Merry Christmas, Mommy. We love you so. by @thealligeeshow
