What is good music? What is beautiful music? Music that moves you, I think. Arianna Pasini’s new LP does all that. This music is utterly minimalist. Sparse, even. The lyrics too. A sort of chamber folk. A whisper. A delicate, ‘gentle dance’ (Danca gentile). That’s exactly what the music sounds like. The album opens with the words ‘Ferma respira’ – pause and take a deep breath. For we stand ‘on the edge of a storm’ (sull’orlo di una tempesta). The upheavals in life, the mistakes we make. In our private lives, as well as a society. But the album isn’t a depressive account of our state of mind; rather, it is precisely this gentle dance with life. A thoroughly positive, hopeful work that ends with the song ‘Coda’, which tells us: Nothing is right, but everything will be alright. Continuare a cantare. Ricominciare. Keep on singing. Start from the beginning.

"Only fools could say that my works are abstract. What they consider to be abstract is, in fact, the most realistic thing possible. For reality is not the outward form, but the idea, the essence of things." So said Brancusi shortly before his death in 1957.

Reducing things to the essentials. Dematerialisation. This is what characterises Brancusi’s work. These were on display for a few months in 2026 at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. There was also a replica of his workshop/studio – an important place for Brancusi, effectively a workplace and museum in one.
I only enjoyed the exhibition to a limited extent. I simply couldn’t manage to go early enough, and so it was, as it always is, when exhibitions are nearing their end: packed. Now, in hindsight, as I write this, a deeper understanding of his work is dawning on me. Truly a giant. Leda, Princess X, The Endless Column, The Kiss, The Sleeping Muse, The Bird in Space. Beautiful and magnificent.

Motorpsycho
2026 09 12 Kulturetage Oldenburg

It was a real treat. Not least because of ‘Whip that Ghost’, the tribute to the Allman Brothers. What a track. It’s always a delight, and it was celebrated extensively. I found it was a great evening; even if the brilliant photographer and long-time Motorpsycho enthusiast @khm_fillmore felt the jam session vibe was a bit lacking (in contrary to the Dortmund gig the day before), we were satisfied. More than that, in fact.

The whirl. According to the great filmmaker and philosopher Alexander Kluge, a kind of metaphor for resistance and obstinacy (individualism in the positive sense). Standing up to the establishment, questioning the status quo. Or, in today’s world, challenging what appears to be the case. Breaking down this black-and-white thinking. Countering these seemingly insurmountable divides, this hatred, with dialectics.

Boone Creek s/t
1977 Rounder Records /2026 Craft Recordings

In 1995, I was in Nashville and was lucky enough to see Bill Monroe at the Grand Ole Opry. Man, what a joy that day was for me. And whenever I think back on it, I’m overcome with a feeling of happiness. Bill Monroe, who had just turned 85 at the time, was a living legend. His band, the Blue Grass Boys, gave their name to a musical genre. Music that Bill Monroe played. A blend of hillbilly music with other original styles. The result was a fiery mix of idiosyncratic, predominantly fast-paced music. Bluegrass, in other words. And you’re almost certainly familiar with at least ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky’, the Bluegrass State, in the Elvis version. Bill Monroe died in 1996, so that was probably one of his last performances. What does all this have to do with Boone Creek? Well, it was 1977. Punk was all the rage. And the lads from Boone Creek just went and played bluegrass. I could draw parallels now, suggesting that bluegrass is, so to speak, the punk of country music. Or something like speed metal. Perhaps there’s even a grain of truth in that, but of course it’s a bit too contrived. Boone Creek were simply brilliant musicians and masters of their instruments who got together for this album and subsequently went on to become giants of roots music in their own right. That’s Americana that truly deserves the name. These days, it’s become a rather overused term. To put it rather bluntly, it’s almost the very epitome of boredom. You won’t find any of that on this album – provided you’re into Dobros, banjos and harmonised vocals. And yes, that photo on the cover alone is worth its weight in gold, isn’t it?

P.S.: The sound sample isn’t exactly high-speed bluegrass, but it should go down well with, shall we say, fans of the Flying Burrito Brothers.
