I have spent 45 years of my life on all sides of casting — from student to performer to director to casting to agent. From school theatre to Broadway to everything in between.

In the agent universe, casting is hourly. No’s are constant. Hundreds to each yes.

Stepping away, I will admit I have missed this continuous roller coaster. But, as it comes as no surprise to you, it’s my children now pulling me back to the casting table.

And no matter how much I love the highs of this business, casting decisions bring both extremes of the spectrum. The jubilation. The deep disappointment. And my heart feels all of it.

A lot of you reading this, I’ve participated in some of your biggest highs and lows.

The productions I was cast in were never consistent. Sometimes I was the lead, sometimes the ensemble. And at 19 came a production I was not cast in.

I was beyond devastated.

But the irony is, I was instead given my first stage manager position. I thought it was a downgrade. My broken performer heart believed it was a sign. I was not good enough.

I did not realize in that moment what an honor it was to be looked at as a 19-year-old and seen as someone who could lead a production in that way.

And that occasion that I was not cast became life-changing.

I would never have been an agent if I had never been a stage manager. I would never have owned an agency. And the thousands upon thousands of bookings and casting decisions that became my professional life would never have been my fate had I been cast.

So now, when a big cast list is posted, my heart is torn between those who are overjoyed and those who are deeply disappointed.

Because I know what it’s like to see your name on the list.

I know what it’s like to think your talent wasn’t appreciated for the gift it is.

But I also know that sometimes the role you didn’t expect becomes your greatest purpose. 📸 @pinupchris by @theannelillian

Here I am, starting year four as Arts Director at Sorensen.

Three years ago, I had no idea what lay ahead.

I didn’t know how to be a mom. I certainly didn’t know how to be an elementary-school mom. I have failed miserably at a hundred things I had never failed at before.

I stepped away from a career that was identity-building and into an environment where nobody knows what I did—and, frankly, nobody cares.

I traded red carpets for drop-offs.
I traded rushed schedules for long waits.

It is the most rewarding and the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life.

I did not come to this naturally or organically. I have had to learn almost every part of it the hard way.

But I’m still here.
I’m still learning.

I’ve always come to this city for someone else. For your openings, auditions and dreams! And I have loved doing that. It brought me to incredible rooms, I never imagined entering.

On Friday, it struck me this was the first time I’ve ever come to the city for me. I love hearing an audience cheering for my friends and those who entrusted me with their dreams. Today, it was me on stage at @carnegiehall !

It was exhilarating to finally preview our Carnegie Hall concert for an audience. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Chorale Coeur d'Alene!

I never knew I needed a choir in my life again! Plus, it’s been so much fun reuniting with old friends and making new music friends!
