Employee of the month goes to this little fella, sorry Michael 😄.

But seriously this rifle and scope combination (Air Arms S510 and a DNT Zulus night vision) is unbelievably versatile and incredibly reliable. The rifle can be adapted to suit the requirements of each job within seconds, the power can be adjusted from low enough not to damage roof iron on a indoor pigeon shoot to powerful enough to knock down rabbits at 100m and a quick change of the presets in the scope has the ballistics all dialed in for each of the power steps.

Air rifles have definitely come a long way! This one shot 121 Rabbits tonight, distances varying from 20m to over 100m. by @theantipest

A lovely gift from the @karamurivercatchmentcollective team to thank me for helping out with a community rabbit control project. It's a duck caller made by a local young fella @featherstonecalls and they have had the Karamu logo etched into it. Very much appreciate it! by @theantipest

No animals were harmed in the making of this video! This is purely a demonstration of the technology.

This short clip I took a few nights ago at 60 metres highlights why we use the latest technology available and how important it is for small animal pest control.

The video was recorded through my DNT ThermNight 335 scope which is multispectral. That means it has one sensor for visible/IR light and another sensor that detects heat signatures, allowing the images of both sensors to be displayed on one screen at the same time.

At the start of the video, the main display is in thermal mode with the picture-in-picture (PIP) showing night vision. I then switch them around so the main display is night vision and the PIP is thermal to show the difference.

With thermal alone, it's extremely easy to spot where an animal is, but often all you can see is a small heat signature. You can't reliably identify what it is, and you certainly couldn't select a clean, ethical shot. With night vision alone, it's much easier to see the detail of the animal. In this case the cat is looking directly at me making it easy to spot thanks to the eye shine. But if the cat had been looking in the other direction without the eye shine it would have been much harder to detect, especially while hunkered down in a hole like this.

Multispectral technology combines the best of both worlds, making it much easier to both locate and positively identify animals. When it comes to small animal pest control, that level of identification is incredibly important.

For this client cats were not on the target list because the neighbouring properties have pet cats that help keep the mouse population under control. Thanks to this scope I was able to quickly identify that this wasn't a target animal and simply move on.

It's a different story when targeting larger animals such as pigs, deer, and goats. Their much larger heat signatures often make a thermal-only scope sufficient for positive identification but the additional visual detail provided by multispectral equipment still gives you more information, helping you make better-informed decisions before taking a shot, especially in scrub/bush. by @theantipest

Quality range time is incredibly important as a professional pest controller, any changes to the setup, fine tuning, testing of new gear or just putting in the practise time all needs a safe and well setup area to do it. I'm grateful for the @rivers_to_ranges team for the time and effort they put in to setup and maintain the Roy's Hill range which is only 15 mins from home. by @theantipest

Unexpected bonus catch today! I was targeting Rats but this young Ferret must have had the same idea and been following the rat trails straight into my trap. #predatorfreenz by @theantipest

New trap to add to my daily runs. Check these guys out, they are running things in a totally different way offering people the chance to invest money into a fund that very actively works towards predator controll across NZ. A fantastic combination of old school methods with technology and financial smarts added to enhance NZ's environment that all kiwis can get involved in! by @theantipest

An excellent example of tree damage caused by Rabbits, this patch of damage is quite large and can lead to infections or in some cases where the bark is damaged all the way around (aka Girdling or ring barked) the tree will die from that point up. Hare damage looks very similar but normally goes higher up the tree. This particular orchard needs some serious Rabbit control quickly before more trees are damaged beyond repair. by @theantipest

This is why we do what we do! Finding the results of our Predator control out in the wild puts a smile on my face, and I reckon this Mallard mum might be pretty busy soon! #predatorfreenz #pestcontrol #mallard by @theantipest
