Maximon/San Simon Ajitz Guatemalan Folk Saint
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Ajitz is a Mayan word meaning shaman, healer, or holy man, and is also the name given the spirit of a deified shaman. During the Spanish Conquest of Guatemala.

Mayans, particularly those identified as traditional spiritual leaders, were converted to Christianity or killed for resisting. But not this particular shaman, who disappeared into the jungle carrying a doll in his own image and an axe, symbolizing his power to clear paths. During the Spanish conquest, all Maya rituals had to be disguised behind the Catholic religion. The Elders used the Cofradias (brotherhoods) to protect and preserve their culture, costumes, spirituality and hierarchy. Amongst other sacred images, the Cofradias worshiped the Sacred Tz’ite Tree, which was hidden behind typical cloths, scarves and a mask, emulating catholic saints. Offerings of incense, candles, tobacco, maize beverages, and cacao

This antique advertising glass panel for Dr. Price’s Special Flavoring Extracts is an authentic piece of commercial history from Chicago, dating to approximately 1917.

The brand honors Dr. Vincent Clarence Price, the grandfather of the famous actor Vincent Price. This successful flavoring extract business established the family’s fortune, making this panel a unique link to the early life and legacy of the iconic actor. In a notable continuation of his family’s connection to the culinary world, Vincent Price later became a respected gourmet chef and cookbook author.

This specific glass panel came from a commercial door in the Chicago facilities just before the brand was retired around 1917. As a rare and specific artifact, it represents a direct connection between the industrial history of Chicago and Hollywood history, making it a significant item for enthusiasts of antique Americana.

Measures approximately 23.5 x 29.75.

19th Century Congolese Nail Fetish

nkisi nkondi

Available at Antique Mule 4926 e Cesar Chavez St $750.00

Dimensions: H - 31” W - 10”

History:
Sculpted with cavities containing magical medicines (bilongo), they are activated by driving iron nails, blades, or pegs into the figure to seal contracts, settle disputes, or punish wrongdoers.

A nganga (ritual specialist) carves the figure (often in human or animal form) and fills a cavity in the stomach or head with bilongo, which are sacred medicinal substances. The cavity is often sealed with a mirror, representing the ability to see into the spirit world.

The term “fetish” is a historical label derived from the Portuguese feitiço, used by17th-19th century European traders to describe these objects, though modern scholars prefer “power object” or “sculpture”. taken in Antique Mule by @theantiquemule
