A few folks have asked why I retired.

I didn’t retire from life, I just retired from a 40 year sculpting career, which was my primary source of income for a long time. This is a bust of Rasputin that I sculpted a few years ago and in all honesty, I was just burned out on pushing the clay. I felt that I simply didn’t have anything left to say in it anymore. It happens. So, I stopped.

If you hit a creative burn out, don’t ever regret your decision in closing the door on that chapter of your life and starting a new one. I don’t miss it at all and I am very happy these days with my creative outlet of writing and will have four novels published soon.

I honestly don’t know if I’ll make a dime from it but that’s not why I did it. I did it because it felt good to write and I felt that I had something valid and worthwhile to say.

It just feels right to me now. 👍

Rereading my 1927 English translation of Anatole France’s “The Revolt of the Angels“.

This is not an easy read, but this magnificent and satirical tome, in its original text of over 100 years ago, makes a convincing and logical argument against the notion of God and the question of faith, religious tyranny and the concept of Satan in the form that makes the argument for “equal time for the opposition”.

People used to give books for birthdays and Christmas back then and would often inscribe meaningful words before the frontispiece. I wonder who Charlsey was and what he could’ve possibly meant about “that Miltonian summer”. I love old books. ❤️

Getting older is such a strange thing to wrap your head around sometimes.

Last night was the first public screening and Blu-ray release party for a film called “Dark Romances” that I made with some friends 40 years ago! It was a horror anthology that we shot in the late 80s and although it had a small VHS release back in the day, I’d largely forgotten about it.

I wrote and directed the “Cardinal Sin” episode of this anthology when I was 23 years old. I made lifelong friendships on that project and it was truly an era in the LA filmmaking scene that no longer exists. I was initially ambivalent about showing up for the Q&A as I had put this chapter of my life largely behind me but once I got there, I was really glad to keep an open mind and see some old friends which truly warmed my heart. We were all so much younger then and it was really mind blowing to see such a happy and full audience who had only heard about this obscure film, but I realized that it was now their cool discovery and it belonged to them, not living in my mind as a dusty, dim memory.

A big shout out has to go out to Daniel Del Pozzo of @culture_shockreleasing for rescuing this pioneering video feature from obscurity and oblivion. Thanks also to @whammyanalogmedia which is a great micro cinema in the heart of LA and to the lovely @stevensbrinke who is always a pleasure to see!

So great to see my old pals John, Barry and Pat. Hard to believe that this film is a “thing” 40 years later… ❤️

Very, very proud that my bronze bust of Bram Stoker that I sculpted is now on permanent display at @moli_museum !

My dear friend @dacrestokerauthor and I had the very great privilege to donate this bust to the former Dublin Writers Museum before they closed. Their collection was then acquired by the Museum of Literature Ireland, where Bram is proudly on display with many original editions of his greatest work “Dracula”! 🦇🦇🦇

Call me nostalgic, but I decided to finish out “Hawksbill Station” the same way I read it when I was 10 years old; a hard back, book club edition with the same offset dust jacket!

You know, I really viewed this 1968 novella as a hold over from the fifties, stifling, conservative era but with largely communist leanings of the day. I view it in a much different light now than I did when I was 10 years old, which was more as a simple time travel story. It’s far more than that and it’s very politically charged. The author, the great and prolific Robert Silverberg, has given the book a liberal, Jewish flavor from the mid-century. Just my take on it, though. The politics in it are more timely today than they ever were, regardless if you’re on the left or the right.

This masterpiece is highly recommended as a great science fiction story and a politically charged thriller. I love it when a book that you read in your youth isn’t as good as you remember it; it’s even better. 👍

Another round of edits on my next novel to be published in December called “Applause”. I’m on my sixth draft.

It’s all about my experiences in working in the Hollywood film industry, some good and some absolutely atrocious. All the characters are largely based on real people that I dealt with so a few people may seem unpleasantly familiar.

I hope you dig it.

Tonight‘s reading; “Hawksbill Station“ by the great and prolific Robert Silverberg.

My mother told me that I would like this excellent science fiction novel when I was about 10 years old and I dutifully read it, not realizing what an intensely nihilistic, political novel that it really was. I’ve reread this several times over the years and picked it up again tonight, having forgotten what an excellent commentary it is on loneliness, desperation and just how genuinely good science-fiction can be when it’s politically charged and a commentary on the human condition.

I know I look a lot older than I was at 10 years old when I first read this, but then again, so do you. 😉

I had parked my ‘53 Ford wagon underneath a tree during the recent heat wave and the extremely high temperatures made the car get so covered with sap that I just couldn’t get off no matter what I did. ☹️

I tried everything (goo gone, alcohol, WD-40) and nothing worked so I finally had to bite the bullet and hire a detailer to do a hard-core, cutting, buffing and waxing that was simply outside of my skill set. My pal Luis @allstar_mobile_detail did an absolutely amazing job and I heartily recommend him if you want to treat your ride right. Seriously, you can actually see the reflection of the trees and the sky in that first shot!

I’ll put the restored set of Ford steel wheels and white walls on there tomorrow. Rolling stock all the way, baby! 😎
