The aching truth of How to Stay Alive is that we carry each version of ourselves with us wherever we go. Are we our youngest, most vulnerable self? Are we our wisest, oldest self? Or the version of ourselves that we are most scared of? Survival, in this song, is what we see when we hold up the mirror—the figures in shadow, the things that appear in chest-constricting clarity—and the agony of learning that pain and joy, solitude and togetherness exist in hazy simultaneity and as the distinct, razor-sharp puzzle pieces of who we are and the lives we have lived. This shimmering, gasping ballad is about if we can make peace with what survival has shaped us to be.

Higher is a breakup song about trying to write a breakup song—because what I really need, what I lost so deeply along the way, is answered in the refrain of the melody, with the weight of my guitar in my lap, in the hoarse first attempt to sing. Follow the sound up, back out into dazzling sunlight; in what we can create, in the attempt, we may find ourselves again.

this song means so much to me. there’s a sort of rawness too it; a pleading question that echoes out into the night. Sun too bright in your eyes. Feathers and glass. Softness and harshness juxtaposed. I hope it resonates 🌹🗡️

Phantom Feelings is about the juxtaposition between being a public figure—trying to be a pop star—and who you are in the deepest, most intimate parts of yourself. Your anxieties, your fears; how difficult it is to hold these two disparate parts of the self together. The glittering persona, the dark and shadowy world of anxiety and depression. Being an artist, making your way in the world, is so difficult, and we search for community and signs to keep going from all of the sources we can. This video is so special, means so much to me. I feel so grateful to work with such talented artists like @bentleyrobles and @frankiejgrande , thank you for trusting me with your incredible song. Thank you doug and the whole crew for your amazing talent and efforts and for running around in the rain with me. Thanks to all the Flopstars because without all of the artists, where would we be?

Face for algorithm: Pulling my music off Spotify has been something I have been considering for a long time. It’s not something I take lightly. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s heavy investment in AI military technology is the straw that broke the camel’s back. If you would like to join me in this boycott as either artist or consumer, please reach out for resources and community building. For now, I am in the process of finding a new streaming home for my music. Everything is still available on Bandcamp and Soundcloud, as well as music videos on YouTube. I am excited and inspired to create and distribute music outside of a deeply cynical, anti-artist corporate model. This system is broken and it’s time for me to shift towards building a new one. Thank you for all of your incredible support and I can’t wait to show you what I am able to create in this new (radical?) phase of my career.

How to Stay Alive bts 🖤⛓️

This video really crystallized so many things about this song…. The heartache of being alone in a crowded room… how small moments of togetherness can effect us so deeply… how when we are all together, we are all still ourselves, but creating something deeper, and more meaningful. This was one of the best nights of my artistic life and I cherish every opportunity to collaborate with such talented artists, and show it to the world. I always had potential—I tell myself that, in darkness, it’s how I know… how to stay alive.

it’s been quite the process to put out this song… as artists we attempt to crystallize, to pinpoint, these precise feelings and images that burn brightly in memory. This song, for me, is what the title suggests. How do we keep going? How do we confront and synthesize each version of ourself? There is no direct route; only the constellation of who we are, and the things we hope to be. I think I have felt a lot of guilt about having to let things go—versions of myself that I dreamed of being, alternate paths of existence that shimmer just out of reach—in order to survive. I’ve learned that survival is, painfully, what makes up so much of humanity. And in humanity, mixed up with all of the pain and doubt, there’s always hope. The ability to share these difficult things with each other is the unique challenge and joy of creating art. Thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart for listening.

🌹🗡️ Here in Los Angeles we are coming together to protect our city and band together against a humanitarian crisis. I dialogued with many of you about the ethics of self-promotion as an artist while we are doing such crucial work. There is not a perfect way or an exact right answer—what many of you have taught me is that it is all about intent and message. We are learning together and giving each other the space to learn is one of our key tools in the fight against fascism.

The underlying thing is that humanity in its varying degrees—the incredible bravery and kindness and empathy we’ve seen, the ignorance and stupidity and fallibility— is on full display right now. It’s that art is always always important, and it’s also important to decenter yourself in key moments.

This song is called “How to Stay Alive” and the title says a lot of of what we are all grappling with. If you have the time and energy and resources and art is something that is helpful to you right now, this is here for you. It’s helpful for me, and creation and celebrating creation is something I need to do while I do as much as I can for my beloved community of Angelenos, our vibrant and cherished immigrants, my trans brothers and sisters, and Palestinian comrades.

Thank you for your attention, your grace, and for being beacons of what humans can do for each other. Thank you for dialoging with me, through art, by standing up for what you believe in. This music will be here for you if you need it and when you want it, and just know I am here for you with all of the fierceness I can muster.

My incredibly talented mother @shelliainsworth wrote a feminist, speculative fiction novella!! I had the privilege of editing this incredible slim volume—it’s such an amazing experience to edit seriously again and for my mother’s first ever novella… fabulous. This is such a timely, wonderful piece of writing. Available in print and digital!!
