An Off-Broadway review of The MAP Theater’s production of “The Invention of Love” By Tom Stoppard at TheaterLab

I still see myself as a student at heart, and when I go to see a Stoppard play, I want to be prepared. I have been in love with his plays forever and have so enjoyed productions of Leopoldstadt, The Coast of Utopia, Travesties, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I want to be caffeinated so I can absorb every word and fully experience the world he creates. Walking into TheaterLab’s white box theater, I was immediately taken by how the space, designed by Bridget Lindsay, resembled a lovely cloud, with a small boat floating in the middle. Even with the beautiful soft lighting by Paige Seber, the white walls and white floors created a celestial feeling that made me eager to go on this ride…

Theaterlab turns 20! 🎭 To celebrate, we’re looking back at the productions that shaped us.

May 2010: Three Sisters Come and Go

Conceived and directed by Orietta Crispino, this piece brought Chekhov’s Three Sisters into Beckett’s world, where each one is comically determined to be the unhappiest of the group. It was a play about despair, loss, and the surprising joy on the other side.

“The best abstraction of all the things that make Chekhov’s plays so marvelous that I’ve ever seen.” – NYTheatre.com

Featuring Liza Cassidy, Claire Helene & Jackie Lowe, with dramaturgy by Marco Casazza and costumes by Sara Baldocchi-Byrne.

Join us for an evening of live action painting, performances, food, interactive art, and a live auction.

score for trees is an interdisciplinary composition that translates the physical structures and growth patterns of New York City trees into live performance.
Using photogrammetry, Maria Takeuchi captures the three dimensional growth patterns of a single tree in Prospect Park, Brooklyn (40.6670809, -73.9694442). Each point in this spatial data is translated into shifts in frequency and textural abstraction, becoming the raw material for a graphic score. Branch structures become notational shapes that inspire sound texture and frequency, estimated growth year duration becomes the piece’s compositional time structure, and branch thickness informs tonal choices in the instrumentation.

The tree at the center of the piece has its own story. Over months of observation, several of its large branches came down in a storm, a quiet reminder of impermanence and of how quickly what takes decades to grow can change in a moment. To notate a growing tree is to notate something already in the process of decaying, its growth and entropy in constant, inseparable transformation.

Rooted in the philosophy of ancient Japanese gagaku, music composed for and inspired by nature, score for trees creates an abstract translation between tree ecology and sound.

The graphic notation is composed by Maria Takeuchi, who invited a group of collaborators to interpret the score and bring it into sound together. Nava Dunkelman performs percussion, Henry Fraser contrabass, rocío sánchez cello, and che ali violin, each artist reading the score’s shapes and durations through their own instrument and sensibility. Takeuchi performs electronics and generative visuals, drawing the ensemble’s interpretations into a shared, evolving image of the tree.

This project is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) through the Support for Artists Grant.

Theaterlab is happy to provide room keys to Kate Vozella, Colm Summers, and their team as they develop This Motherless Earth

We invite you to join them in the room to witness and respond to this brand new work.

They’ll share up to 45 mins of what they’ve been working on, followed by an opportunity for you to respond and provide thoughts and insight. Your feedback is welcomed and essential to the next phase of artistic development.

An artistic respite, where new works are given space to breathe, grow, and engage with outside eyes at an early stage.

Theaterlab provides a place where artists of various disciplines can unpack their bags, display their ideas, and share the room keys with engaged spectators.

HOTEL NEW WORK provides collaboratively-driven companies in the midst of creating ambitious new work with 40 hours of rehearsal time and one work-in-progress showing with feedback.

This Motherless Earth is set in a small desert town, in a future where women can no longer carry children and parenthood is regulated through state-issued synthetic infants. When an Auditor arrives to observe a couple’s eligibility to receive one of these children, the present fractures with memories of a childhood shaped by a mass illness. The development process will center on the play’s atmospheric weather events—sudden heatwaves, storms, flash flooding, and drastic temperature shifts—using projection and visual design to create recurring environmental motifs that reflect the story’s emotional and political climate.

Kate Vozella (she/her) is an Australian playwright based in New York City. Her work spans theatre, film, and movement, and has been presented at venues including the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, the Seymour Centre in Sydney, and on platforms such as Google Arts & Culture and Marquee TV.

Her play Burning Falling Rising Monster—shortlisted by Platform Presents and adapted into a 2021 short film starring Kyle Soller and Phoebe Fox—was further developed with Arterial Projects in 2023. Her short film MIA, featuring Jason Butler Harner, won Best Original Story at the Cannes World Film Festival. In 2023, her movement film A Series of Incom taken in Theaterlab by @theaterlab
