Bloch has a new guest essay in The New York Times about shade and embracing the shadows of tall buildings in our new hotter climate.

"In neighborhoods where tall buildings are banned, we need to plant more trees, which block the sun and cool the air. Few oppose their leafy shade. But in the long run, the public needs to get over its fear of more permanent shadows.

Yes, it's a shame when a new tower darkens our backyard garden or obscures our view. But if we can learn to see what these new developments add to our cities, rather than just what they take away, we may be more accepting of shadows as a form of urban cooling." by @theauthorscommunity

A wonderful interview with Lidia Yuknavitch is up on The Oregonian!

"Where Chronology of Water's aims were to invent a language and form of expression that spoke a body, Reading the Waves is an act of return, revolution (as in turning over), and recursion. Same with all my novels.

Maybe my whole body of work and my life are that pattern in endless waves." by @theauthorscommunity

Recently 📚 Read

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens - Stevens sure knows how to write a thrilling page turner. My favourite read from November. So many twists and it’s almost too realistic. Another great reason to read this one (especially if you’re Canadian and have been through BC) is the local towns mentioned and how on the nose Stevens is about them.

Nineteen Steps by Millie Bobby Brown - written by a ghost writer I wasn’t interested in this one for a while but figured now is the time and I’m glad I did! Based loosely on Brown’s grandparents during WWII, it’s a historical romance that I really enjoyed. MMB narrated the audiobook and it’s very well done.

King of Ashes by S. A. Cosby - my second Cosby novel and it did not disappoint. Crime thriller noir is not a genre I read often but when it’s this good I have too!

QOTD: have you read any of these gems yet? by @theauthorscommunity

CROCO, written and illustrated by Azul López and translated by Kit Maude, has earned a spot on this incredible list, following its glowing starred review!

+This vibrant and heartwarming story, available in English and Spanish, follows a crocodile who tumbles into a deep hole and discovers that true strength often comes from within. With bold colors and dynamic compositions, Azul López brings warmth and energy to a tale that celebrates resilience and friendship.

★ STARRED REVIEW! "The story captures both individual character and collective community effort, showing failed collaboration giving way to successful self-reliance without undermining the value of the friends' attempts to help. Three cheers for this resourceful reptilian!"-Kirkus Reviews

Oscar-Winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton is adapting EVERY VALLEY by Charles King for Walden Media!

"Published in 2024, Every Valley uncovers the story behind one of the world's most beloved musical works, George Frideric Handel's Messiah. More than a simple origin story, Every Valley reveals the turbulent, gripping world in which Handel's Messiah was born, an era rife with war, political strife, and personal suffering. With cinematic scope, the book traces the lives of a diverse cast of real historical figures, each of whom contributed to the creation of a transcendent musical masterpiece that continues to inspire hope centuries later. by @theauthorscommunity

"A transcendent memoir about family, class, and the contours of loss... In her clear, concise prose, Chung makes the personal political, tackling everything from America's crushingly unjust health care system to the country's gauzy assumptions about adoption, a practice that is itself rooted in economic inequality. Her observations are particularly timely at a moment when life expectancy in the United States is falling ... Chung writes with aching and transcendent longing for a past she never had; for her flawed home state; and for a more compassionate future ... With this work, Chung offers a luminous addition to the literature of loss, from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Notes on Grief to Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking." -The New York Times Book
