The Trans Canada Trail offers us
hours of exploration and
endless opportunity. From crispy cold snow shoe excursions, to lilac tea, to our favourite places we watch each season, we have much to learn from this place we visit often. This trail
used to be a train track, that
stretched all across Canada, which is a fact that often adds a bit of imaginative fun to our strolls. Children naturally love trains, and our stroller frequently becomes a train from long ago, traversing our great land.
We have been walking this trail for the last 12 years, and there have been a few occasions where we have found railway spikes. Once, we even found a piece of the rail! A few weeks ago something similar caught Brookey’s eye, but she decided to leave it in place until she could explore it with the big kids on our PA day adventures.
The friends transformed into historians and treasure hunters, determined to learn about the past, as they worked together with sticks to free the artifact from decades of dirt, moss and flora. They had found this lantern, which we didn’t know much about. We brought it home to investiagte.

As we walked home, I encouraged the children to come up with a story involving the lantern. How had it gotten there? Who had used it? When we arrived inside everyone took time to write their spooky, historical tale about kids, mysteries, dark nights and trains. It was delightful to watch their creative processes. “There are some letters here...what do they mean?” noticed and wondered Brookey.
Brookey and A tried deciphering the rusted words on top by writing down what they though they saw. With the help of google we soon realized this lantern was in-fact
used on the trains of the past and is called “The Hiarm L Piper Co. Kero”.

From our research we discovered that this lantern may have been used to signal what the train was doing (continuing, slowing, stopping) and was made in a factory in Montreal. We would love to learn more about this find, and have some books from the library to borrow on the Canadian Railway.

This history lesson took a scientific turn as the friends tested how they may remove some of the rust from the surface (vinegar, baking soda, soap by @thebabblingbrookhcc

Every season we take over the community space in our local seniors home, spreading joy and building relationships. Intergenerational Programming offers a space to combat loneliness in older adults and builds empathy in all of us. Belonging and relationships are the cornerstones of any healthy community. Our Christmas event is already planned, so if you’re a family in the Ptbo area, follow along for details! #ptbo #local #familytime #homedaycare by @thebabblingbrookhcc

Intergenerational Programming is a passion of mine! I’ve been bringing children to seniors homes in some capacity for the last decade, and the results are always magical. Swipe to read a small snapshot from our most recent event. Huge shoutout to @ptbobooklady and @readymadeplaycanada who showed up with books and playdough to contribute (along with their adorable children!) without me even asking! @zuniaroth also contributed to the success of this event through candy donation, and @k3rri93 was our fabulous face-painter! Peterborough really does have such a strong “mom community” Interested in joining us for our Christmas Event? Follow along and let me know!🙏 #intergenerational #peterboroughontario #community #halloween by @thebabblingbrookhcc

In the trees, together 🌲🌲🌲 by @thebabblingbrookhcc

It’s always such a delight to receive our mail club from Canadian Artist @meaghanberubeart . This month we focused on fall colors in mixed media. We used paint, crayons, and watercolor pens. We then went looking for the fall colors around us. The aspen trees are golden and gorgeous. I always look forward to this treasure coming in the mail that inspires us to notice the beauty of CANADA! #canadianart #artstudy #ece #homeschool by @thebabblingbrookhcc

Like you needed another reason to visit the @ptbolibrary …Our amazing local library now has trading cards to collect! We stopped by to grab our starter packs, and earned a few more by asking for a recommendation from one of our favourite librarians, and choosing an interesting read from a display. I am always so grateful to the fantastic staff at our Library who not only run wonderful programs, but take the time to chat, and share knowledge. The Librarian B asked for a recommendation took so much time with her, asking her really great questions (like if she wanted a non-fiction book or a story book) and was just generally so eager and encouraging. We always feel welcome and wanted at the @ptbolibrary! Next card on the list…borrow from a community kiosk! #peterboroughontario #ptbo #library #community #ece by @thebabblingbrookhcc

A wee bit of #documentation on this beautiful Tuesday!
Documentation makes learning visible to parents and families and when added to shelves and walls allows children to see themselves, reflect on our rhythms and their accomplishments. #gardening #autumn #seasonal #ece by @thebabblingbrookhcc
