DEVELOPMENT HEAVEN | Screen Development Workshop & Masterclass

Good projects need more than a great idea. They need the right foundations.

No Thing Productions is excited to share that Brooke Silcox is hosting Development Heaven, a four-day masterclass series supported by Screenwest and the West Australian Government, designed to help Western Australian screen creatives navigate the development process with greater confidence, clarity and care.

Across four days at The Backlot, we’ll tackle the practical, legal and ethical questions that can make or break a project - from owning the story and securing rights to documentary ethics, working with vulnerable participants, and the agreements that protect everyone involved.

Featuring industry expertise, practical insights and conversations about how to do things properly from the very beginning, Development Heaven is about building stronger projects and a healthier screen industry.

Book to Film returns this Sunday OCTOBER 11 with Adaptation (Spike Jonze, USA, 2002, 114 mins)
Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, fresh off the success of Being John Malkovich, had a problem. He was tasked with adapting Susan Orlean’s non‑fiction book The Orchid Thief but found the sprawling work of literary journalism about obsessive plant dealer John LaRoche impossible to crack. So, he started another screenplay that began: “Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, fresh off the success of Being John Malkovich, had a problem…”
Teaming up once again with Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze, Adaptation tells the story of Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), a neurotic screenwriter struggling to adapt Orlean’s book, while his twin brother Donald (also Nicolas Cage), writes the kind of commercial crowd-pleaser Charlie hates. After attending a Robert McKee writing seminar, Charlie pushes his adaptation further and further from the source material… and that’s when things really start to unravel. Charlie’s life begins to intersect with that of Orlean (Meryl Streep) and LaRoche (Chris Cooper), becoming increasingly outlandish and leading to an ending that self‑reflexively deconstructs both the art of adaptation and the act of screenwriting itself.

The real Susan Orlean was mortified when first shown Kaufman’s script but admired the completed film for how it skilfully honoured the themes of her book while refusing to adapt the book itself. Adaptation was a critical and commercial success, winning Chris Cooper a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. As the script was credited to Charlie and Donald Kaufman, it also had the dubious honour of being the first film nominated for Best Screenplay to be co‑credited to a fictional screenwriter.

This session will be presented by Damien Spiccia, who will host a discussion following the screening.

Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief is available in paperback, Kindle and audiobook editions.

Ready for tonite’s corporate event at The Backlot. Very limited seats available.

Perth - this one is for you!🎥🍿🎬🍷

Some stories entertain us. Others stay with us long after the credits roll.

Join Business Women Australia tonite at The Backlot for an exclusive after-work cinema experience in partnership with The Backlot Cinema as we present On the Basis of Sex on Wednesday 7 October in Perth, facilitated by filmmaker Suzanne Worner and producer/researcher Dr Susie Conte.

Inspired by the early career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, this powerful film explores courage, ambition, partnership, persistence, and the pursuit of equality. It’s a story that continues to resonate with women leading in business, the professions, and their communities.

This is more than a movie night. It’s an opportunity to pause, connect with an inspiring community of women, and take part in a facilitated post-film conversation led by The Two Suszies. Together, we’ll reflect on the themes of the film and explore the stories that continue to shape our work, leadership, opportunities, and lives.

Whether you’re a business owner, executive, professional, emerging leader, creative, adviser, or simply looking for a meaningful evening with great company, we’d love you to join us.

Bring a colleague, friend, daughter, mentor, client, or someone you’d enjoy sharing this experience with. We have the cinema all to ourselves.

Places are limited. Reserve your seat today. https://buff.ly/BWTzQgE

Join us 2pm today for an exclusive Perth screening of SOMEONE LIKE ME, a moving and refreshingly honest story about independence, intimacy and learning to embrace life on your own terms.

Living with cerebral palsy, a young woman has spent much of her life navigating the expectations and limitations placed upon her by others. When she encounters a specialised organisation supporting people with disability, a new world begins to open up—one that challenges her perceptions of relationships, sexuality and, most importantly, herself.

Tender, thought-provoking and at times confronting, SOMEONE LIKE ME explores the universal desire for connection, autonomy and acceptance, while offering audiences a perspective rarely given space on the big screen.

A special opportunity to experience contemporary Hong Kong cinema right here in Perth.

Last night SHIT SCARED became fucking real. 💩🎬

We invited a bunch of people to @thebacklotperth sat them down in front of the big screen and did our own little Gogglebox-style reveal of the first few episodes.

And then I SAT THERE AND WATCHED THEM WATCH IT. 😳

No hiding & No editing their reactions 😆 No pretending I didn’t see someone’s face when something landed.

Which, when you’ve poured your guts into something, is a completely cooked thing to do lol 😂

But I guess that’s the whole fucking point right?

Shit Scared isn’t just a podcast. It’s a feeling @shitscaredthepodcast

That butt-cheeks-clenched, heart-racing, fuckkkkk what if this all goes wrong? feeling we all know way too well.

And this show is our permission slip to say the scary thing….Do the scary thing & talk about the shit we normally keep to ourselves.

Because most of us are walking through life absolutely fucking terrified of what’s on the other side.

So we may as well face it together.

Last night people dropped their shit at the door, shared the things THEY’RE shit scared of for The Shit Kit 💩 and laughed, cried and reacted along with us.

And I fucking loved every second of it.

Over the next month, you’re going to slowly see this whole wild thing revealed before SHIT SCARED launches in November.

Huge love to Gia @gia_94 my podcast producer, who sees and feels this show the way I do and has been working fiercely behind the scenes doing all the shit I absolutely do not want to do 😂

To Belle @belleverdiglione my ride or die through this whole thing, who keeps showing up, pushing me and helping turn the ridiculous ideas in my head into actual things.

To Kacie @thecontentauthor for capturing it all @hey.lauren for keeping me organised & suprising ME with the Heidi faces @its_me_jessyg pics lol you & Belle are the best😜 the legends at Backlot, and every single person who walked through those doors and got shit scared with us.

This thing is happening.

And yep…

I’m fucking shit scared. 💩

Follow @shitscaredthepodcast because we’re going to drip-feed you the chaos over the next month.

You don’t want to fucking miss this

The very first person who took a chance on Shitshow Live Stories was this guy. ❤️

Ian @thebacklotperth

When I first came to him, every seat in this beautiful cinema was empty. I had an idea for a show, and he believed in it.

“From little things, big things grow,” he told me.

And fuck, he was right.

I remember having coffee with a friend, telling her about the show and asking if she wanted to be involved. Afterwards, she messaged to say she didn’t want to do it, and I was devastated.

I called Ian and told him all about it, and he was straight in with, “This is so great. I love it. It’s going to be so great.”

When I was questioning it, he was excited about it. I’ve never forgotten that ❤️

For more than 4 years, we’ve worked together. Every single Shitshow has been at Backlot. And every single time, we’ve sold out those seats.

You might know Ian as the face of Backlot, but there’s so much more to this magnificent human. He’s kind, caring, authentic and creative. He mentors people from film school. He believes in so many people and gives them an opportunity to bring their ideas to life.

On the eve of my podcast @shitscaredthepodcast viewing party, I just wanted to give this legend a massive shout-out @thebacklotperth

Ian, all these events I get to bring to life at Backlot wouldn’t be possible without you and your team. Your staff show up, look after us and give us the best bloody service, every time.

If you’re thinking about hosting something at Backlot, this is my very enthusiastic recommendation 😜🥹

Thank you for taking a chance on me. Thank you for believing in my Shit Show 🥹🙆‍♀️

From the bottom of my heart i love you 🥰 show this man & team some love ❤️
