10 Pounds And 11 ounces of North Cornish Bass. What A Truely Magnificent Creature. Birds Had been feeding outside of one of my night spots most of the day totally unreachable and the mark still just sand and rock. Confidence was mixed, obviously Bass could be arriving , but a gully further up the beach was full of kelp bits and would be no doubt plauge the mark just as the fish would be pushing in. As Darkness fell I arrived the night mark, still dry and stepping down onto the sand I thought I'd quickly set about making a mental map of the sand gully in front and used a bit of stick I'd found to draw around the main depression that dropped off the main beach into a 2 ft deep run . I climbed back to my casting spot and moved a bit of slate to where I stood. There I mapped horizontal shapes and like some nutter mimed my casts to where I though the pushing tide would back current any bait dead or alive into the flooding gully. With a decent amount of swell weedless unweighted soft plastics were well off the practical menu so now with the light well an truly gone I did the Dave Taylor test with some large shad swimbaits . The test being simply looking at your selection upon the bottom you'll be fishing over. The Lunker city swimfish in 5 inch with a 15g 5/0 fish shaped jighead stood out a country mile and had a back history of picking up some tanks for me last year, Win win !! The thought of fishing an exposed hook wasn't exactly ideal but it was a starting point . Watching the water push in I could see a few rafts off spaghetti weed push past and on their merry way also the kelp bits were staying tight inside so the run into the gully looked clear, a bit of luck !!! After a few cast up toward the beach and a gentle retrieve I could now feel the back current pulling the lure back into the gully now in 4ft of water. So the work began repeating the cast up then letting the lure swing back into the gully the real handle barely turning just enough to keep the lure off the bottom .After about 15 as mindful as possible casts into where I'm hoping a few fish are now foraging I felt a small ping almost like a baby pollack would hit a lure riding over a kelp bed . Went out to test the tenryu lunakia 8'2-25g and check it's viablility on the coast , at a 25g top end rating and in some decent swell it handled a few 60cm chunks very very well , even holding fish in the gully swell drawn back before leaving them on the pebbles .I'm very much a tobis ammos guy colour wise , these though on the New sandeel colour, sandy Andy 22g (which has been a staple since 2019 in tobis) . The rod though has very capable handling , but I think 22g was it's limit on casting with a proper punch . These fish were sitting right in the shore dump , most likely filtering out what was loosening in the pebbles or washed in from the storms and gave me a couple of heart jumping takes in the last few yards of the retrieve . The water clarity was gin clear and this was basically a test , but as ever I still stuck to my rule of fishing as if you have them in front of you even if you think they aren't , turned out they were ! Good luck for the coming season folks . by @thebassination

Quite a tussle with this lovely thick 66cm fish . Right at the end of super slow retrieve with regular taps , @evobass_lures 130 sabre on the 10g coyote providing a good size meal doing the death wobble .

A brief sign gave the shoal away , with the surface like glass I spotted a small area moving like very shallow water running over a gravel bed tiny little ripples then gone , then again a little movement obvious that it was bait being disturbed, then gone again . I knew the depth was 3ft or so definitely not bottom , I quickly moved into position and a couple of fish in as many casts on the black minnow hopping across the bottom , then quiet , then 100 yards down the birds worked for less than a minute so I moved past to a pinch and ended the session with about a dozen fish out of the mirror like scene. Literally felt dead , so weird.

Yellow Light season is here , my favourite time of year to catch bass.

A lot of smalls then some quality chunks turned up , a foot or two of water , full rapids, a 22g Andrew with a bass butter rub down, clanking along digging in and letting go every hit became an instant explosion on the surface , very very fun , current very well utilised by this one , proper accounted for itself.

Absolutely honoured to have done battle with this 66cm brute in 6ft of surf rolling up the slope of a north Cornish headland . A 42g 150 Andrew was the only thing in the boxes that would even lock in to huge walls of water rolling onto the granite . Hundreds of eel scattered across the barnacles , birds trying to dodge the sets crashing in and pick up the little silver blades . Bass Scamps tugging away at the tail of lure body , a few even managed to hook them selves and even those offer a challenge to get up the gulley to safety . Id seen good fish here a few weeks earlier but they didn't even sniff , but today in the wildness and feeding frenzy this one got convinced. As the water drained after each wave it made the absolute best to escape as the drag screamed off each time , then in a lull I managed to steer it into a gulley and hopefully a safe place to land , half way up the gulley a new set of lines approached and the calm gulley turned into a cauldron having to just leave the weight of the fish under water and wait for just the right surge to leave the fish on a first ledge , then to hand line the last 15tf of braid , next surge onto the next ledge , then I finally got hold of the leader and made the lift to safety at this point it was a case of a quick carry up to grassy terra firma measure, photo , then a recovery session in a high pool before return .

Can't beat a North Cornish adrenaline session to clear the cobwebs collected on the river .

Does lure size matter ? One of two absolute mid sixty minters at 65cm . After 4 ebbing tides and plenty of miles finding the most productive exit point on a river stretch 400 yards in length things came together .Averaging 20-25 fish sessions over the course of 5 days and a handful of 40 and 50cm fish to show amongst the waves of 30cm fish , the only lures I could get a guaranteed take on was something average 4inch , having had a very big fish turn off a small lure after seeing me waist deep bolstered some conviction in just slogging it out through the smalls . On the last two sessions, balls of schoolies just drifting down stream awash in sand eel literally gulping bait looking like they were spawning the sun came out and there in plain sight I could see the better fish drifting under the smalls , exact same drift speed . What to do ? Well rather than swim the bait from up stream, I cast across current let the lure complete sink and anchor . Then as a bass ball swims past , swim the lure as low as possible to the deck under the bass ball. Each time the bass balls would part with line fright a small one would quickly commit it's self and hook up . But repeating the process over, one retrieve the the rod hooped over and the drag screamed off , 64cm ! A dozen fish later and it's whizzing again 65cm !

My take away from proceedings , sometimes small profiles are what they expect and trigger on without to much convincing no matter how big the bass, BUT your going to catch alot of scamps too . Just stick on a big lure and wait ? I tried over and over and couldn't get a better bigger low swimming fish to turn , not even once . Yes little lures catch big bass , but be prepared for some LRF size numbers !! The new attractant formula also helping things I'm sure .

Been all about the eel game since may, with the early season sun the pin eel grew on fast and found its way to shore a lot quicker than last year . Hundreds and hundreds of smalls under the belt with the odd few breaking the mid and upper 50cm barrier . When it's like this even stepping up size makes no difference for me . So trying to take away some data about tide depths ,fish positions and where bait is gathering to keep the learning expanding ready for when better fish become present . Also helping my attractant development research going forward(been in the ammino peptides lab since 2020🤫) . Do small profiles catch big bass ? Yes!! but also catch proportionally more smalls too !! . Does scent matter? , personally 💯.

Following a big group of fish up and down the beach on a pushing tide , picking up very good fish amongst the smalls then moving again , then again until finally running out of sand and clambering up onto some boulders and granite . I saw this very lean 70cm fish rise in the wave face and hit my 90mm casting pencil in full murder mode about 60 yards out , then the line cut along the wave face before it dove deeper and gave an amazing scrap in 4ft of north Cornish surf . Again birds offering help to the bass next attack. All the tips of it's fins looked red and bloodied , signs of a net encounter ?

Bigger Rods , bigger jig heads and just keep on keeping on . North Kernow just hasn't stopped pumping for what feels like a month or more . Run away to the south coast? You must be kidding !
