Dear Cristiano..

From a (possibly deluded) fan..

The dust has settled on Portugal’s opening World Cup group-stage draw against DR Congo.

Here are my thoughts…

A tactical discussion on what went wrong with Portugal’s opening group stage game vs DR Congo. Something the media outlets and esteemed pundits/ journalists/ ex players won’t admit because it doesn’t suit their agenda.

How easy it is to eat off the back of badmouthing Cristiano Ronaldo—it’s the favorite sport of the press and journalism that, unfortunately, we consume today. One thing is true, though: being a footballer for Portugal’s National Team gives you the incredible privilege of “screwing up” like you’d swallowed a truckload of laxatives, and the criticism for “the stench” always ends up getting eaten by Cristiano Ronaldo.

So… Real Madrid, eh?

For so much of this night at the Stadio Olimpico, Jose Mourinho’s side were outplayed by one of his old teams in Roma.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side were 3-1 up going into the 83rd minute — thanks to a Marten de Roon effort and a double from Donyell Malen following a Kylian Mbappe goal — and seemed set for victory in this ground’s first Champions League match in more than seven years.

But Madrid, as they so often do, produced an improbable fightback.

Three weeks of preparation, another bad Real Madrid performance. Exactly where they left off, with a narrow home win to show for it.

The same issues, no structured plan, no setup that platforms the players. Individuals still have to come through and rescue the result.

The conversation will turn to the win or refereeing decisions. Meanwhile, the actual footballing work remains atrocious.

Yan Diomandé reads the chance on time and finishes it. The team then shows spirit to defend the lead after the red card. Credit for both.

But that being the entire case for today’s performance says enough. Real Madrid should have far more to show.

It’s hard to imagine a worse international team outing than that of Cristiano Ronaldo after such a career.

Cristiano Ronaldo, national idol, symbol of the country, the most famous Portuguese of all time, decides to leave the national team’s training camp alone, through the small door, betrayed by his ego, unable to realize that not even he can halt time. Chronicle of the sad inability to grasp the end.

For the second time this season, Real Madrid needed a late winner from substitute Carlos Espí to beat Elche 3-2 on Tuesday night. The result came from a game of two halves, with total domination in the first half succumbing to concede two late goals from Elche to pull level before Espí’s injury-time heroics.

FT. - Real Madrid 4-1 Rayo Vallecano.

Kylian Mbappe’s brace and an assist and Guler’s cameo from the bench secures Real Madrid’s pretty much straightforward victory against Rayo Vallecano despite a shaky start to second half.

FT: Real Madrid 2-1 Inter

Real Madrid kick off their Champions League campaign with a huge win over Inter.

Real Madrid has defended poorly, attacked poorly, moved the ball poorly, occupied the spaces poorly, and its midfield has been a real pain in the neck.
Absence of Arda, Bernardo was felt.

That said, Real Madrid has done the most important thing: score two goals and capitalize on Inter Milán’s mistakes.
