In this episode of Behind the Built Environment, BESA Chief Executive David Frise speaks with Mark Enzer, former Chief Technical Officer at Mott MacDonald and former head of the UK National Digital Twin Programme, about why construction needs to rethink value, data and outcomes.

Mark argues that the built environment cannot achieve better outcomes by improving delivery alone. To create greater value, the industry needs to examine how decisions are made, how organisations work together, and how data is used throughout the full life of an asset.

Rather than focusing solely on digital tools, this episode examines the thinking that needs to change before technology can make a meaningful difference. It explores why systems thinking, digital twins and AI are only useful when they support clearer outcomes, better decisions and more joined-up ways of working. by @thebesagroup

Latest episode of Behind the Built Environment OUT NOW: You Can’t Plead Ignorance: Why Every Contractor Needs to Understand the Law

A building engineering services contractor whose life was destroyed by a bribery and corruption scandal has issued a blunt wake up call to other business leaders who he fears could fall into the same trap.

In this episode BESA’s CEO David Frise sits down with Andrew Blunsdon and looks beyond the charges to the impact of a justice process that spanned 15 years and a Proceeds of Crime hearing still ahead in 2026. In that time, Andrew’s business collapsed, his pension disappeared, and the emotional cost fell heavily on his family.

This isn’t about re-running a trial. It’s about understanding how a contractor with no criminal intent can become entangled in a criminal case and what every professional in the built environment needs to learn from it.

If you’ve ever thought, “Just help the client out; I’ll ask questions later,” this is the episode you cannot afford to miss.

If you are experiencing any issues mentioned in today’s Podcast, you can get in touch with The Lighthouse Charity, who offer a free service to support the construction community. by @thebesagroup

🚀BESA Skills Legacy Programme Off to a Flying Start!

We’re excited to announce that our new Skills Legacy programme is already making an impact - with strong industry interest and the first graduate secured.

Launched in March, the scheme tackles the critical shortage of apprenticeship trainers, assessors, and building safety auditors by recruiting 100 skilled professionals to support FE providers and train the next generation of engineers.

👏 Congratulations to Jon Hogg of Ductbusters, the programme’s first graduate, who has achieved his Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) from Brooks & Kirk!!

With support from the Manly Trust, funding the first 50 participants, this initiative is breaking down barriers for FE colleges and giving experienced engineers the chance to give back to their industry.

Will Inheritance Tax Changes Destroy Family Businesses? Fiona Graham on What Owners Must Do Now

BESA Chief Executive David Frise sits down with Fiona Graham, Chief Operating Officer at Family Business UK to unpack what recent inheritance tax reforms mean for family-owned firms. From her journey in public affairs to leading the national body championing these enterprises, Fiona shares candid insights on succession, governance, and giving family businesses a stronger voice in policy debates.

She explains why the government’s changes to business property relief could put long-standing firms at risk, why specialist advice is now essential, and how planning early can protect continuity. Despite her pessimism about policy shifts, Fiona remains optimistic about the resilience, creativity, and future growth of family businesses across the UK. by @thebesagroup

💙 Remembering Rab Fletcher 💙

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our former President, Robert (Rab) Fletcher, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Rab was not only a hugely respected leader in our industry, but also a kind, modest, and generous man who touched the lives of so many. With over 30 years of service in construction and building services engineering – from his early days as a “time served plumber” to becoming mechanical services team manager at Fife Council – Rab led with humility, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to others.

As BESA President in 2022/23, chairman of BESA Scotland, and founder of our Local Authority Forum, Rab built connections that strengthened both our Association and the wider industry. He was also a passionate advocate for apprentices, personally mentoring and supporting young engineers to ensure the next generation had every opportunity to thrive.

Even in difficult times, Rab was a source of optimism and inspiration. His cheerful spirit, wise counsel, and dedication to the BESA community will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Rab’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, kindness, and hope for the future of our industry.

Rest in peace, Rab. 💙

@WorldSkillsUK RACHP Finalist Spotlight: Congratulations to Samuel Jones of Industrial Cooling Equipment and Practical Refrigeration Training Centre on reaching the final of the WorldSkills UK Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) competition!

Initially drawn to RACHP by the promise of a hands-on career, Samuel realized after studying A-levels that a practical job suited him best. As he’s progressed through his apprenticeship, he’s been captivated by the industry’s breadth and the diverse skills it offers.

Samuel is most looking forward to developing and learning new skills, as well as connecting with like-minded peers who share his enthusiasm for the trade. What he enjoys most is the satisfaction that comes from completing challenging, large-scale projects and seeing the results of hard work. Outside of work, Samuel stays active with hiking, rock climbing, and wild camping, and values quality time with friends and family.
