In a major infrastructural achievement, India’s ambitious rail infrastructure development project, the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), became fully operational. On Tuesday (September 8, 2026), Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the final sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), one of the two parts of the DFC.

The Prime Minister inaugurated three remaining sections of the WDFC, namely, New Sanand-North-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-New JNPT. The sections stretched up to 326 km were built at a cost of over ₹20,700 crore. They link the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, Maharashtra, with Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, where it intersects with the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC).

With the inauguration of three sections, the entire stretch of 2,843-km dedicated freight network, combining the 1,506-km WDFC and the 1,337-km-long Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), has become operational.

With the completion of the DFC, India has become the only country with a fully electrified dedicated freight corridor built for routine double-stack container operations. The electric double-stack arrangement enables two containers to be carried one above the other, leading to reduced time and fuel consumption and more cargo per train.

The rail tracks in the EDFC and the WDFC have been specifically designed for the electric double-stack arrangement, with overhead wires fitted higher than usual. Even though both corridors are capable of double-stack container operations, they are more prominent on the WDFC. The cargo on the EDFC mostly carries coal, steel, food grain, and other bulk mineral freight.

Indian sprinting witnessed a historic two-day battle in Ranchi as Gurindervir Singh rewrote the men’s 100m national record twice during the Federation Cup Athletics Championships. After first briefly holding the record on Friday, Gurindervir returned on Saturday with a sensational 10.09-second sprint to become the first Indian ever to breach the 10.10 barrier.

The Punjab sprinter clocked the historic timing in the final of the men’s 100m event on May 23, reclaiming the national record from Animesh Kujur and also sealing qualification for both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The dramatic finish came just 24 hours after Gurindervir and Kujur had already exchanged national records during the semifinal heats, producing one of the most exciting sprint rivalries Indian athletics has witnessed in recent years.

Gurindervir initially broke Animesh Kujur’s previous national record of 10.18 seconds by clocking 10.17 seconds in the opening semifinal heat. For a few minutes, Gurindervir stood as India’s fastest-ever man over 100 metres.

But the celebrations barely lasted.

In the very next semifinal heat, Odisha sprinter Animesh Kujur responded immediately with a stunning 10.15-second run to reclaim the national record and officially breach the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 10.16 seconds.

While Animesh secured CWG qualification on Friday itself, Gurindervir had narrowly missed the mark by just 0.01 seconds with his 10.17 timing.

However, the Punjab sprinter returned in emphatic fashion during Saturday’s final and completely shattered the barrier with his 10.09-second sprint.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday reviewed the manufacturing of India's first indigenously built high-speed train, the Bharat Bullet Train (B-28), at BEML's Aditya manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.

The train is being developed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor and is being positioned as a major step towards building indigenous high-speed rail technology in India. The project combines advanced engineering, local manufacturing capabilities and passenger-centric design tailored to Indian operating conditions, an official press release said.

During the visit, Vaishnaw reviewed the specialised manufacturing infrastructure, including precision-engineered jigs and fixtures used for carbody fabrication. He witnessed key stages of production, such as underframe, sidewall and roof assembly, final car assembly, surface preparation and treatment processes that are critical to meeting the stringent quality and safety standards required for high-speed rail operations, the release said.

The minister also witnessed a "squeeze test", a critical quality-assurance process in which the train carbody is subjected to controlled compressive and tensile forces to assess structural strength, rigidity and dimensional stability. He reviewed the manufacturing of side and roof modules and observed their integration into the final assembly process.

ISRO launched its next-generation navigation satellite NVS-03 aboard the GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on Friday. The satellite successfully separated from the launch vehicle and was injected into its intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

The satellite is the third in ISRO's next-generation navigation satellite series, envisaged to ensure continuity of navigation services under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists and engineers of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on the successful launch of the GSLV-F18 rocket carrying the next-generation navigation satellite NVS-03, saying the mission would strengthen India's indigenous satellite navigation system, NavIC, and advance the country's pursuit of self-reliance in critical technologies.

NVS-03 carries an indigenous atomic clock along with procured atomic clocks. It also incorporates the L1 navigation signal in addition to the existing L5 and S-band signals, expanding the capabilities of NavIC. The system is designed to provide coverage over India's landmass and an area extending 1,500 kilometres beyond its geopolitical boundary.

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said the successful launch had restored the NavIC constellation to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites.

Addressing the gathering after the launch, Narayanan said the 2,250-kg satellite was precisely injected into its intended elliptical orbit by the GSLV-F18 rocket.

In a landmark ruling that connects ancient Vedic wisdom with modern legal consequences, a court in Gujarat's Gandhinagar has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment and imposed a heavy fine of Rs 3 lakh each in a cow slaughter case.

The Kalol Sessions Court opened its historic judgment on Monday by quoting shlokas from Manusmriti, an ancient Sanskrit text, that declare cows to be the mothers of the universe and pillars of universal well-being. The ruling addresses an incident that took place in Jamla village within the Gandhinagar district, where local police officials caught the culprits while processing a massive cache of 277 kilogram of beef.

The legal proceedings commenced following a raid conducted by a Kalol police team in August 2024 at a residential property in the Dhankniwas area of Jamla village. Acting on a specific tip-off, police officials discovered multiple suspects actively engaged in illegal animal slaughter and recovered sharp cutting weapons, weighing scales, and several transport vehicles. Live cattle found at the scene were rescued and transferred safely to a local cow shelter.

Presiding over the case, Sessions Judge BR Rajput opened the judgment by invoking profound Vedic verses and scriptural wisdom to highlight the deep cultural reverence for cattle in society. The court cited traditional Sanskrit shlokas establishing that cows are regarded as the mothers of the universe and sources of universal well-being.

The court noted that protecting cattle is deeply intertwined with duty, compassion, and the enforcement of absolute truth.

The judgment referenced traditional scriptures describing the sacred origins of the divine cow, Kamadhenu, and emphasising that the protection of all life and adherence to righteous laws form the core foundation of a just society.
