“Brooklyn has been waiting for Jean-Michel to come home.”Seventeen years after opening @thebishopgallery in Bed-Stuy, founders Stevenson Dunn Jr. and Erwin John are bringing one of Brooklyn’s most influential artists back to the borough through “Our Friend, Jean: Early Works of Jean-Michel Basquiat.”The exhibition features rare early works, archival material, and intimate photographs from Alexis Adler, Basquiat’s former roommate and partner, documenting the artist before international fame. Join us this Saturday May 16th for the opening of Our Friend, Jean - a collection of early works by Jean-Michel Basquiat. On loan from friends, Alexis Adler, Jane Diaz, Katie Taylor, and Hilary Jaeger; Our Friend, Jean is a chance to experience Basquait from a different vantage point, one rooted in proximity, history, and quiet power of beginnings. As the doors open, we look forward to welcoming visitors into a presentation that offers a more intimate perspective on Basquiat’s early creative life. On view are works that invite closer gaze. These are pieces that carry immediacy, experimentation, and raw spirit of a young artist on the cusp of becoming one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. While modest in scale, these works offer something profound. They create nearness to the origins of a legend, and a rare glimpse into the personal, formative moments that helped shape his voice. The exhibition also marks the soft launch of The Bishop Arts & Research Center (BARC). This initiative is dedicated to making world class art more accessible, creating space for it to be available to be discovered, studied and experienced more intimately. On view through July 25, 2026“Working across sculpture, assemblage, and installation, Mark Anthony Wilson Jr. builds systems of ancestral reception, vessels constructed from discarded machinery, cast aluminum, and ancient symbols to hold what history has unnamed and unburied. His work is at once architectural and deeply intimate, drawing from Egyptian hieroglyphs, Nankani fractal compounds of Burkina Faso, and the fiction of Nnedi Okorafor to geometrically compose lineages that stretch across millions of years.
