We had some thought-provoking conversations this week about how much dancers would transform if they alternated between studios that do and don’t have mirrors.
It could encourage mind-body connection and embodiment of the lines they’re practicing.

What are your thoughts on this?

We had such an inspiring day at the @onedanceuk @nidms.uk Body Perspectives conference yesterday.

It’s so hopeful to hear proactive people in the industry already making changes, and wanting collaborations to help keep that momentum going.

We presented our new intervention which supports dancers in improving their body image and self-worth, and get curious about body expectations.
We had conversations with wonderful dance colleges and companies who would like to be part of the rollout!

DM or drop us an email if you’d like to find out more.

Bodies grow, develop and redistribute weight as part of normal development in puberty, but weight changes can be a frightening prospect for dancers growing up in an industry that places so much emphasis on appearance.

Changes in body shape or weight often come with pressure to stay in their pre-pubescent body; dancers may feel driven to restrict food, exercise beyond what their bodies need, or develop a difficult relationship with eating.

It can also influence a dancer’s decision to access healthcare for issues like missed periods and persistent fatigue, which deserve to be taken seriously, regardless of a dancer’s weight or appearance.
A dancer shouldn’t have to look unwell for their concerns to be valid.

We need to challenge the culture that allows weight to overshadow wellbeing, and create dance environments where growing bodies are supported rather than feared.
A dancer deserves to be seen as a whole person who will flourish if nurtured holistically.

Your Body. Your Dance.

Dance teachers hold an enormous amount of influence.

They want their dancers to grow, reach their potential and pursue their dreams. But they’re working within an industry that can send harmful messages about body shape, size, food, exercise and what it means to be a successful dancer.

Often, teachers haven’t been given the training or resources to navigate these challenges confidently.
They may recognise that this needs to be addressed, without knowing where to start.

Equipping teachers is where we come in! We help teachers create environments where dancers can develop their skills, ambition and artistry without feeling that their bodies are obstacles to overcome, because protecting dancers’ wellbeing and supporting their potential aren’t competing priorities. They belong together.

This is part of why we’re bringing you The Body Project Dancers: to contribute to conversations, education and prevention around body image in dance.

A healthier dance culture is possible, and we all have a part to play.

Your Body. Your Dance.
