Jumping high is one thing. Testing well is another.

Here are 4 steps we have observed from some of the best jumpers in the world to help you test your highest vertical jump

1️⃣ What is your jumping plant style? RL vs LR? 🤔

This can help you understand the best or most comfortable angle in which to approach the vertec. You don't have to do this but it has proved very beneficial for many jumpers

2️⃣ How many steps should you take? 👣

You don't want to figure this out the day you test. You want to go with what is most comfortable. Ideally if you can bring in the most momentum off of 3-5 steps you'll jump your highest but only if you have the coordination and rhythm to do so. If not sticking to 1 penultimate step or 2 steps might be your best approach

3️⃣ RHYTHM: Slow to fast!!

Not fast to slow! You should be gaining speed throughout your approach. That penultimate step should be fast and aggressive, carrying all that momentum

4️⃣ Violent and aggressive arm swing

This can aid in your coordination, rhythm and timing of your jump. USE THEM.

When ARE box jumps useful?

1️⃣Offloading + explosive intent
Can be useful in structured programming, rehab/return to sport, or introducing jumping to less-trained athletes.

It's great for generating max intent and effort while reducing landing demands on the knees and back

2️⃣ Jump variety + fun
Not every exercise needs to be the most optimal and specific option all the time. Just ripping it with the boyz and/or ladies can be really fun.

Variety can keep training engaging and give athletes another way to express explosiveness

Tyler and I were just having some fun while prepping for the very first @apexathlete.official
competition back in October 2025

@thebounceacademy cycle been getting my bounce feel pretty good by @thebounceacademy

5 things I'd tell myself if I had to do it all again (note: added 7"+ on my vert & dunked for the first time ever, while in my 30s):

1️⃣ THERE'S NO MAGICAL WORKOUT OR EXERCISE. A lot of vertical jump content focuses on exercises, sets, reps, and intensity. I don't always post about it because it can be a bit overrated in my opinion: the best program is one YOU CAN adapt to and progress with.

It's about identifying the qualities you need to reach your goal and training them accordingly.

2️⃣ EVERYONE IS A DIFFERENT PUZZLE. Your training should be individualized to your different strengths, weaknesses, training histories, and needs. There's no universally perfect set-and-rep scheme so stop looking for it. Stay curious and open minded with training and play the long game.

Programming guidelines are a starting point, not gospel. Learn to recognize how YOUR body responds and adjust accordingly. The goal isn't to see how much training you can survive. It's to do enough to stimulate progress without compromising your ability to keep training.

3️⃣ LESS IS MORE. Especially important if you're older, coming back from a long hiatus, or just starting out. Start with what you can recover from, build gradually, and give your body time to adapt. You don't need to do everything at once.

Prehab and therapeutic exercises have their place, but managing your sprinting and jumping volume is one of your most important tools for managing injury risk.

4️⃣ SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. Progress usually takes longer than you think. Gains might come quickly in the beginning, but they'll eventually slow down. That's normal. Injuries, plateaus, and setbacks can happen, too. Don't let them convince you that you're failing.

5️⃣ DO THE THING. Put in your reps and understand the technical aspects of your goal, identify your deficiencies, and prioritize what needs improvement. Developing strength and power matters, but so does learning to apply those qualities to the actual skill you're trying to master. Learning (or relearning) a skill takes time. Be patient with yourself.

Leg day from this week by @thebounceacademy

Men’s Health just said: "athleticism is the new fitness flex". You now have CBum and Larry Wheels training to be more athletic. Not only is this shift towards athleticism happening, it's 1000% for the better.

The fitness industry seems to finally be catching up but I've always been fascinated by training like an athlete since I was a kid. Getting stronger, jumping higher, running faster, moving better, developing coordination, and seeing what your body is actually capable of doing. Now at 35, that hasn't changed. I'd rather be chasing a higher vertical, a faster 40, and new feats of strength than making aesthetics the sole purpose of my training.

Of course, hypertrophy ("bodybuilding") training absolutely has a place in a well-rounded program. But somewhere along the way, bodybuilding became the default framework for general fitness...

You can build an impressive physique while neglecting entire physical qualities that make you capable, resilient, and independent as you age. The funny part is that my physique got better as I started training like an athlete and so many of my clients have experienced the same

Outside of strength, power, speed, coordination, balance, mobility, and the ability to actually use your strength are things that can help you play sports with your friends, keep up with your kids, explore new hobbies, move confidently as you get older, and maintain a higher quality of life for as long as possible. These aren't just qualities reserved for competitive athletes

Super underrated benefit: it changes your relationship with your body. When your goals are tied to what you can do rather than what you look like, fitness can become a much more rewarding pursuit. Instead of judging your progress primarily by the mirror, your body fat percentage, or the number on the scale, you have a reason to continue long after you've reached some arbitrary physique goal.

Because the goal is to keep fitness as part of your life for as long as you can, sooner or later aesthetics won't be enough to keep you motivated to take care of your body. It can be a lot more sustainable path of fitness.
