Congratulations @maramay8 on a beautiful closing event for @theboxla , marking 19 years shaping one of the most important alternative art spaces in Los Angeles. When artists create spaces for communities to convene, they hold both possibility and risk for the collective. I personally view it as an act of service. And to go out with the Johanna Went and Asher Hartman fashion show was another fabulous gift! Xoxo by @theboxla
Please join us this Saturday, June 6th for the Last Box Bash, a Johanna Went Fashion Show with Asher Hartman. Entrance will be at 822 E 3rd St., through our parking lot at the back of the gallery. Please note the front of the gallery is CLOSED. The Fashion show will take place inside the gallery, but will be closed to the public from 8-10pm. There will be an outdoor viewing space of the fashion show livestream, with food for purchase and light refreshments. Box merch will also be available for purchase. After the performance the gallery will open to the public and celebratory dancing will ensue. We did it again. Thank you to everyone who came out for Frieze After Dark to celebrate LA Art Week. Huge thanks to Alexis Borges for hosting us, and to The Box – Mara, and Robert for co-hosting. Hunter Harvey for the incredible floating installation, and our DJs Banofee, Bebe, and DJ KGB for keeping things sweaty. Major gratitude to the bartenders, servers, and pals who made the night happen — and special thanks to everyone doing flips off the diving board at 2am. We love you. LA Art Week felt electric this year. We ♥️ LA. WALLY HEDRICK: SEX POLITICS RELIGION 7 Shows to See During Frieze Los Angeles The postwar Bay Area is often remembered for its literary output, yet recent exhibitions have directed renewed attention toward its countercultural artists, who sought out the region for its distance from market pressures. Coincidentally, a two-venue survey of Pasadena-born artist Wally Hedrick aligns with an excellent presentation of work by Jay DeFeo (Hedrick’s former wife), at Marc Selwyn Fine Art; a show of Wallace Berman’s Verifax collages at Michael Kohn Gallery; and an exhibition featuring seven of Bruce Conner’s films at the Marciano Art Foundation – all of which are necessary viewing. A cofounder of Six Gallery (where Allen Ginsberg debuted ‘Howl’ [1955]) and an early antiwar agitator, Hedrick rejected stylistic continuity, moving from junk assemblage to mystical monochromes to polemic signage with ‘improvisational’ freedom. ‘The political issues that were central to his practice are unfortunately very much still with us’, Parker Gallery founder Sam Parker tells me. As Los Angeles remains a site of national friction, Hedrick’s refusal to toe the line models both inward reckoning and political protest. EUGENIA P. BUTLER ARCHIVE OPEN STUDIO WITH CORAZON DEL SOL LOCATION: The Barn, architect A. Quincy Jones’s personal home and office built in 1950. This event is hosted by Metabolic Studio February 26-28 | 10-4PM The Barn | 10300 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles 90025 RSVP link in bio. In 2025, as part of Metabolic Studio's Special Projects in Archiving, artist Corazon del Sol, Butler's daughter, began excavating the archive dedicated to Butler's life and work. Eugenia P. Butler played a formative and often overlooked role at the border between conceptual art, community art practice and experimentation. This incredible body of paintings, drawings, journals and ephemeral pieces are now on view at the Barn, the former home and practice office of renowned architect, A. Quincy Jones. The archive will continue to be on view at The Barn Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 29, 2026. EVENT: Corazon del Sol and Catherine Wagley on Eugenia P. Butler Sunday March 1 | 10AM-2PM The Barn | 10300 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles 90025 RSVP link in bio On March 1, we invite you to a special conversation about Butler's work featuring Corazon del Sol and Catherine Wagley @cgwagley , author of the forthcoming book She Wanted Adventure: Five Gallerists Who Gave Their Lives to Art in the 1960s and 1970s. Doors open at 10:00AM for light refreshments, conversation begins at 10:30AM. We are so grateful to Metabolic Studio for their ongoing support of the estate of Eugenia P. Butler. -- Video courtesy of Metabolic Studio by @theboxla
