Getting a tattoo apprenticeship isn't just about wanting it more than everyone else.

Studios aren't looking for the person who wants it the most.

They're looking for someone who gives them a reason to invest their time in them.

Your artwork.
Your portfolio.
Your understanding of design.
How you approach studios.
The mistakes you've already learnt to avoid.
How seriously you've prepared before you've even walked through the door.

That's the part I think a lot of people get backwards.

Don't just focus on finding an apprenticeship.

Focus on becoming someone worth apprenticing.

After 20+ years in tattooing, I created The Tattoo Apprentice: The Complete Guide to give aspiring tattoo artists the knowledge and direction I wish people had when I started.

Because every bit you learn now puts you one step further ahead.

Want to see what's inside?

You want to become a tattoo artist but you don't know
where to start.

You've got the passion. Maybe the drawings. But no one
will give you a chance and you don't know why.

I've been on both sides of that door for 20 years —
as an apprentice and as the person giving apprenticeships.

I know exactly what studios are looking for. And I put
everything into one book.

The Tattoo Apprentice: The Complete Guide.
352 pages. Hardback £75. eBook £40.

20+ years tattooing.
Hundreds of portfolios reviewed.
5 apprentices taken on.
Thousands of tattoos.
And plenty of mistakes along the way.
I took everything I could from that experience and turned it into the book I wish existed when I was starting out.
The Tattoo Apprentice: The Complete Guide.
352 pages built for aspiring tattoo artists.

You all loved the chrome x trad tattoo flash sheet that I did, so how about some straight up chrome? 👀

If someone could get the spider or beetle that would make my day ✨

I’ll definitely be doing some more chrome tattoo flash soon so keep your eyes peeled (or message me for something custom 👀)

Your portfolio can be the difference between a studio saying “sorry, we’re not looking” and asking you to come in for a chat.
But I think a lot of aspiring tattoo artists misunderstand what a portfolio is actually there to prove.
It doesn’t need to show that you’re already a tattoo artist.
It needs to show your creativity, your potential, your understanding of tattoo design and, most importantly, give someone a reason to think you’re worth teaching.

After 20+ years tattooing, reviewing hundreds of apprenticeship portfolios and taking on 5 apprentices myself, I’ve seen what makes someone stand out — and what can get a portfolio put down.

So I’ve put together a free guide covering what I actually look for, including what to put in your portfolio, physical vs digital work, presentation, common mistakes, what to avoid and a 50-piece framework you can use to build your own.

Had a lot of fun playing around with this trad x chrome 🤘🏽

I’d have even more fun tattooing it, so drop me a DM!

I’ve got so many ideas for more chrome mashups so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Got anything you wanna see in chrome (and another style) drop your ideas in the comments! ⬇️

STOP redrawing your shading every time it doesn’t look quite right.

Try this instead 👇

Select the area → draw your shading → choose Arc → move it around until you find the placement that works.

You can quickly test different shading positions without having to erase and redraw it over and over again.

One of those little Procreate tricks that can seriously speed up your workflow.

This Procreate tip can literally save you HOURS. ⏱️

If you’re constantly re-selecting the same areas while shading, colouring or making adjustments, you’re wasting time.

Instead, save your selections.

It means you can jump straight back to specific areas of your design whenever you need them — no carefully tracing around them again, no rebuilding selections, just select and carry on working.

It’s one of those tiny Procreate features that can make your whole workflow so much faster.

Save this one — you’ll definitely use it. 👌

Need your lines thinner or thicker without redrawing everything?

A little inside into the layers of my tattoo designing process. Breaking it down to different aspects makes it much easier especially with editing or changing ideas. This Neo trad Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was super fun and I always like playing with my face slider concept. I'd love to tattoo it and remember my new Book The Tattoo Apprentice is available currently on pre order but books will be available in about a week!

Start becoming someone worth apprenticing.

The Tattoo Apprentice: The Complete Guide was created to give aspiring tattoo artists the knowledge I wish I'd had when I was trying to find my way into this industry.

352 pages covering drawing, design, tattooing, equipment, technique, developing your work, approaching studios and understanding what it actually takes to become a tattoo artist.

The latest batch has sold out, but the next order is arriving at the beginning of October and pre-orders are now open.

I also have a small number of imperfect copies available for anyone who doesn't mind minor cosmetic damage to the book.

If you're serious about getting into tattooing, don't spend your time waiting for someone to give you an opportunity.

Use that time to become harder to say no to.
