50+ years of passionate, fulfilling work... Rock n' Roll Photographer/Art Director then Chef/Restaurateur.
Now on the road 24/7 in Moonbeam 🚐👤💨
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Before he was Sky Saxon, he was Richard Elvern Marsh from Salt Lake City, a kid who admired Errol Flynn enough to borrow the feel of the name for himself. By 1965 he was fronting The Seeds with Jan Savage, Rick Andridge and Daryl Hooper, building one of the sharpest sounds out of LA’s garage scene.

As music journalist Kirk Silsbee put it: “It was a keyboard-driven band that used sinister minor chords, a development that presaged the Doors. Sky Saxon’s sneering, slack-jawed vocals marked him as one of the early punks. Along with Arthur Lee of Love, Sean Bonniwell of the Music Machine and the Chocolate Watchband’s Dave Aguilar, he was one of the best of the post-Jagger/pre-Morrison singers.”

Wilco’s Nels Cline remembers Sky as his first rock idol: “Sky’s amazing charisma—as he appeared rather ubiquitously on TV shows like Boss City and The Groovy Show and American Bandstand in 1966–67 was galvanizing. I would stare in disbelief as he... would gyrate around lasciviously, holding the microphone in every cool way imaginable. He seemed from another planet.”

Keyboardist Daryl Hooper put the band’s chemistry simply: “It took four people to make the Seeds. Sky couldn’t have done it without us and we couldn’t have done it without Sky... you had four people that clicked together as musicians.”

And Sky had his own philosophy behind it all: “I see all these bands as missiles, like we have wars... how do you fight for peace? You have to earn it, you can’t fight for peace, that’s war.”

In 1973 he joined the Source Family, a Hollywood Hills commune led by YaHoWha, becoming Sky “Sunlight” Saxon for the rest of his life.

Sky “Sunlight” Saxon: August 20, 1937 – June 25, 2009. Happy birthday to one of garage rock’s true originals.

June 15, 2015 - June 15, 2026.

Today, my 11 Year Vaniversary.
⏳Still enjoying the passing of time and still lovin’ living 24/7 in Moonbeam where the coffee’s damn hot, I sleep soundly after daily 3 hour soaks in natural hot springs that flow under my bed and a feral cat I call Whiskers comes by to visit if it wants to and comes inside to hang out with me if it wants to 😼
🪡 The wear and tear on all has been addressed as we’re hunkered down for our third summer in this California Desert Oasis🌵

R.l.P. to Chuck Negron 🥀
It’s truly a miracle Chuck lived to 83, as his shocking memoir “Three Dog Nightmare” illustrates.
Most of us around back when TDN hit the big time figured Chuck would be the first in the group to overdose or maybe just nod-off-again while driving💥
Beyond the charts, Chuck Negron's life was also a story of survival and redemption.
He faced personal demons, battled addiction, and lived to tell the tale - later becoming an inspiration to countless fans through his honesty, recovery, and continued love for music.

I first met Chuck and the group when I was 17 years old and still living at home with my parents.
They were performing as “The Tricycle” at an after hours club on Sunset Blvd and went onstage at 4:00am.
Through the lean times, the hit records, 💰💰💰💰, so many drugs, Hollywood Mercedes Benz, weddings, births and tour travel in every kinda rig imaginable - Three Dog Night were immense, intense and very important in my short 14 years as a working rock ‘n roll photographer 📸
I went on to art direct and photograph 10 TDN album covers and was also introduced to the mother of my children by the groups accountant!

A nice New York Times🗞️ surprise came today about a project I worked on in 1982 after moving to NYC.
Most don’t know about my five (5) years in NYC working as an Art Director / Graphic Designer.
📸 ALL my Rock Photographer Album Cover work came my way without ever having a portfolio to show! Soon after the move to New York I put together my first portfolio and bought the first suit I’d owned since my bar mitzvah.
🔲 The first record company I called on was CTI Records known for striking album covers featuring vivid, colorful, and surreal photographic artwork by photographer Pete Turner. At that time, unbeknownst to me, CTI owner Creed Taylor was advertising for a new Art Director.
I simply rearranged my new portfolio to showcase my Art Direction / Design work. I was hired and wore my new dark blue suit to work on the 37th floor at One Rockefeller Plaza.
🗣️ “The Compleat Beatles” Art Direction / Design was for Stephanie Bennett’s Delilah Communications.
I was introduced to Stephanie by The Bee Gees after she approached them to publish a Bee Gee book.
The “Compleat Beatles” cover art received a Paul Revere Award for Graphic Excellence. by @thebucketlisttrip

Happy birthday today Linda✨
We first met when I was 16 years old in 1966 at a Stone Poneys recording session in Hollywood at Capital Records.
📸 Photo shoots had me picking Linda up in Laurel Canyon at Steve Martins house and driving her all around town… Griffith Park, Topanga Canyon, Coldwater Canyon and Venice Beach. After one session at the beach we stopped to visit my Mom who gave Linda a bathrobe to wear while she dried her wet clothes and also made us lunch.
