{Burning Woman}One of the works presented in the exhibition Met Huid en Haar is the video performance Burning Woman by Belgian-Turkish artist Gülşah Ayla Bayrak. In this performance, Bayrak literally sets herself on fire, using her own body as the central medium of the work. The act of burning becomes a physical intervention and a moment of transition.Drawing from personal experiences of migration, loss, and cultural identity, Bayrak explores how memories and histories become inscribed in the body. Borrowing its title from an 1872 essay by Namık Kemal, the Ottoman intellectual who challenged European misconceptions about the “East” during a period of sweeping reform, and from Zeynep Çelik’s book of the same title, “Europe Knows Nothing About the Orient” frames Gülşah Ayla Bayrak’s practice through a critique of representation. Moving between photography, installation, found objects, and performative gestures, Bayrak treats photography less as a documentary medium than as a material that slips between evidence and fiction. Objects gathered from Turkey, Belgian flea markets, online second-hand platforms, and personal networks no longer affirm their origins; instead, they reveal the projections and misreadings accumulated through their circulation.Rather than searching for an authentic image of the “Orient,” Bayrak questions whether such authenticity can exist at all. Her work suggests that culture is not a fixed essence to be represented but something continually negotiated through relationships. In this sense, “Europe Knows Nothing About the Orient” argues that Europe’s failure to know the Orient lies less in ignorance than in its insistence on reducing it to stable definitions. {ZWARTBERG}On July 4th, the exhibition Zwartberg opens at Cinema Victoria.The title refers to a place intimately connected to Genk’s mining history, while raising broader questions about labour, migration, landscape, community, and memory. For this exhibition, 21 artists bring together a diverse range of works, including paintings, sculptures, performances, and poetry slam.Rather than presenting a single narrative, the exhibition starts from the multiple meanings the place and its name still evoke today. jaarlijks reiken we de C-mine student award uit aan één van de genomineerden voor de Wanatoe-prijs: dit jaar gaat de award naar @yasminghsr Yasmine Gheisari (26) studeert fotografie aan @luca.schoolofarts, is lid van @thebuilding.be en was eerder al te zien op C-mine in de expo ‘Wasteland’haar afstudeerproject, ‘de zoete afstand’, is een installatie waarin ze haar Marokkaans-Iraanse roots verkent en textiel, persoonlijke archieven en fotografie met elkaar laat kruisen de award kreeg dit jaar de vorm van een masker, gemaakt door kunstenaar Lysandre Begijn - wiens expo ‘Massa Confusa’ trouwens vanaf morgen opent wil je het werk van @yasminghsr graag zelf ervaren? je kan het nog bezoeken t.e.m. zondag 28 juni in @z33be proficiat Yasmine 🤍foto 1,3,4: @frankabbeloos by @thebuilding.be

Met trots delen we dat Too blue, too deep, we rise, a talisman ignites van Mounir Eddib werd opgenomen in de collectie van het Bonnefantenmuseum.Het wandkleed werd verrijkt door de bijdragen van Öznur Özturk, Amaryllis Beckx, Yasmin Gheisari, Millo Op de Beeck, Robin Kuypers, Hélène Manca, Morena Pascale en Hunter Claes. De keramische kralen die het werk rijkelijk bekleden, werden gevormd en gebakken tijdens gezamenlijke momenten van ontmoeting binnen The Building.We feliciteren alle betrokkenen met deze mooie erkenning.ENWe are proud to share that Too blue, too deep, we rise, a talisman ignites by Mounir Eddib has been acquired by the Bonnefanten Museum collection.The tapestry was enriched through the contributions of Öznur Özturk, Amaryllis Beckx, Yasmin Gheisari, Millo Op de Beeck, Robin Kuypers, Hélène Manca, Morena Pascale en Hunter Claes.
