I’m a big fan of River from LVVRS. River is authentic, classy, humble and a talented music artist. It is truly rare and something I admire and respect. I usually prefer to work alone creatively, but once in a while I crave collaboration, so I was honored for his yes!

This song is simply about what being believed in can do to a person, and it was 8 years in the making. As someone who wrestles with imposter-syndrome, sometimes just knowing someone else thinks you’re capable, makes you capable. It manufactures courage you didn’t know you had.

The Canary Yellow feat. @lvvrsband “Call on Me” is streaming everywhere, lyric video on YouTube, and just like the gratitude I had for their yes, I will be so grateful to yours as well. Go check it out if you like the color red. 🐦‍🔥 by @thecanaryyellow

Getting right back to it, this new The Canary Yellow song is special. I grew up with copious amounts of childhood trauma. At 37 years old with a family of my own now, it’s mostly behind me, but I let my inner child weave his tapestry of longing into this one.

Who doesn’t want to belong? Much of my life, I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere, and that melancholy followed me into adulthood. It shows in my art. I use music to free myself from an emptiness I often carried. Finding community in others is a struggle because I had to cope with not having it for so long, and I self-medicated this void with ambition.

Here is what it sounds like to feel like a real life Lost Boy. I’m cutting myself loose today. “Belong” is streaming everywhere, lyric video on YouTube. by @thecanaryyellow

I unofficially released this song twice before. Once was in early-2020, before The Canary Yellow was born, then again in mid-2020, with it sort of rebranded for the new project. Somewhere in there, it lost its relevance. It felt.. confused, was this an “old me” song, a “new” song? Unsure, I just took it down.

But this was one of the first songs to bring me back to songwriting. There’s a special, relentless quality about art that ropes you into creation. When you’re tapped into that, it’s hard to ignore, even when there’s no telling who will care you’re making anything.

For the last 3 years, I’ve had an aversion to music. So caught up in fighting my family’s health battles (then turning those into a book, more @joshualebreton ), I forgot who I was. I’m still not sure, but to help get me back, I’m re-releasing this song as a B-Side track this time. It feels real, it feels distant too, but it’s still me. I loved making this one, and I hope you find something in there as well.

25 years ago, I began my walk with music. I entered the industry professionally in my 20’s. Had the most grandiose experiences of my life, learned a lot about my craft, but I also arrived at some painful realizations. I discovered the music industry was not where I wanted to be. It wasn’t the place I saw myself remaining to raise the family I intended, be the artist I admired in other artists, or grow into the father I wanted to be for my daughter. This devastated my mental health.

So in my 30’s, I quietly exited professional music. I gathered up my skills and passion, and I fashioned them into a glorified hobby. I soul searched, remembered carefully why I am so drawn to music, and out of those ashes came The Canary Yellow.

On 10/28, I’ll release my first song in two years titled Your Ghost. It paints the private neurotic struggles I have as a music artist, having let go of centrally pursuing his craft. Feelings of unimportance, wrestling myself into submission accepting why I abandoned it, and how no matter how far I run.. the creative arts haunt me. Its ghost visits with reminders that if you have something true to say, to take up your medium and say it. I’ll honor that gift as long as I have something to contribute. This time, with a song as dark as the season of Hallowe’en. by @thecanaryyellow
