POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Caparica is not a beach with a city behind it. It's a city with a beach in front of it, and it's just starting to know it.

We started this account to follow that shift. The new openings, the people making things happen, the corners visitors keep walking past, the food, the culture, the community. Less postcard, more dispatch.

Follow along. There's a lot to show you.

THE BODY FEELS. THE MIND SWITCHES OFF.

That is @numa.collective.pt ’s own description of what happens at its parties. Born in Setúbal, the electronic music collective leans into underground sounds and the physical side of the dance floor — music you feel before you think about it.

For this one-off open air, they join @ziggy.caparica , tucked inside the Parque Urbano da Costa da Caparica, one of Caparica’s most beautiful green spaces.

Six DJs play from 17:00 until 02:00, with a chill-out zone, art to see and buy, and food throughout.

Art on the walls. On the clothes. On the people.

Flow began with tattoos in 2019. Since then, it has developed an artistic practice that moves between skin, walls, clothing and prints, drawing on Caparica’s surf culture while leaving room for personal expression.

The clothing carries original artwork designed within the project. Tattooing gives that work a different, more personal relationship with people. Graffiti supplies put the tools for expression into other hands. These are connected parts of a project whose founders describe their purpose as cultivating culture, inspiring others and being inspired in return.

The gatherings belong to that same idea. Inviting another artist’s work into Flow opens the conversation further, bringing different practices, interests and people together.

Wrong Altitude. Right Place.
was one of those moments: Phil Bucher’s photography, Danymal’s kitchen and Dedy Dread’s music meeting inside the creative world Flow has been building.

We’ll keep you posted about the next gathering. Until then, the studio, the art and the conversation are worth going for.

For a burger joint called @dallas.burgerjoint , the route to Caparica needs a little explaining.

Belgian founders Pierre d’Andrimont and Margaux Marcy returned from New York with a particular appetite for its burger joints. Back in Portugal, they began working out how to recreate that experience.

In 2019, the first Dallas opened beside Lisbon’s Pink Street. That is where the burger in our reel began making its name.

Other addresses followed, including Shoreditch, Dallas’s first location outside Portugal. But the spaces have taken different forms along the way. In Anjos, the emphasis was on a small, takeaway-focused joint. The idea has been to keep Dallas recognisable while allowing each place to respond to its neighbourhood.

In Caparica, we think they got that right.

Inside, you recognise the old-school American burger joint, interpreted with a more contemporary look. Outside, the terrace changes the pace of the meal. It is somewhere we would happily leave more time for lunch, rather than fit it between everything else on the agenda.

That is what we mean when we say Caparica sets the tone. The terrace gives the place a relationship with the afternoon happening around it. Dallas feels comfortable here.

We tried the Italian Summer and the Chipotle. The Italian Summer puts grilled tomato and courgette alongside Grana Padano, rocket and basil mayo, an unusual combination that makes a welcome change from the familiar burger order. The Chipotle brings cheddar, caramelised onions, jalapeños and chipotle sauce, with the intense flavour we would come back for.

When you live in Portugal, or spend any real time here, wine tastings quickly become part of the
basic rituals.

You expect vineyards, cellars and a few glasses at the end.

At Bacalhôa, that turns out to be only a third of the story.
The name is familiar from the bottles. What we did not expect was how little the visit initially feels like a winery. It begins at Palácio da Bacalhôa, whose history is centuries longer than the wine business built around it.

The walk moves through vineyards and gardens, past tiles that have survived generations and towards a lake house where the parties are very easy to picture.

For a palace, it feels strangely intimate. Majestic, yes, but also lived in. As if every person who passed through left an opinion behind, in the architecture, the books, the portraits or the objects that remained.

Of all those people, Orlena Scoville is the one who changes the direction of the story. She arrived in Azeitão in 1935 to study the tiles and found the palace in ruins. It had been
neglected for decades and was not even for sale. The architect helping her suggested she abandon the idea and buy a castle in Sintra instead.

She did not change her mind.

Orlena acquired the estate and spent the following decades restoring it. Her grandson would later help transform it into one of Portugal’s major wine producers.

So, by the time you return to the car and continue to Bacalhôa Adega Museu, the visit has already become much more than the tasting you thought you had booked.

Here, the story changes again. Historical rooms give way to contemporary art, working cellars and long rows of barrels. Only then does the wine fully enter the picture, ending with a tasting that includes Moscatel de Setúbal.

The wine is very good.

It is simply not the only part of the visit that stays with you.
What should have been a wine tasting became a deep dive into Portugal through one very surprising place.

All thirty minutes from Caparica.

Yesterday, Irmão invited us to KÃYO on the Beach. For @kayo.events , it was a return to where the idea first began a few years ago.

Our soft spot for Irmão is probably no secret by now. October was still warm, the sunset seemed perfectly in time with the music, and the crowd gave us plenty to admire. The happiness and kindness we keep coming back for felt just as good with the bass turned up.

Thank you for having us. See you at @praia_irmao .

The first season of Quinta Mira Rio ends this weekend. And what a run.

Its founders told us the idea began with a simple observation: they could not find a place between Lisbon and Caparica “where different communities could really meet outside the codes of a club or a classic venue”. We know the gap they meant. Sometimes a towel on the sand isn’t enough, but a beach-club table asks for more effort and money than the day calls for. QMR offered a middle way: relaxed, with enough happening to give the afternoon a shape.

QMR spent the summer seeing how many turns one place could hold. Yoga in the morning, mates by the pool, an open-air film, a DJ set at sunset, a proper night out. By August, it was running four or five events a week. The range was always the plan. The team were just as deliberate about how it felt: “care in the curation, a mixed crowd and the feeling that nobody is out of place”. We felt that last part too.

They chose Caparica with both sides of the river in mind. People could finish a beach day here instead of heading home. People from Lisbon had a reason to cross the bridge, while those of us on this side could stay put for once.

When we asked what QMR would take with it if it moved, they answered: “the community, the curation and the spirit of mixing”. The view would be impossible to pack. The rest could travel.

Enjoy the last two days. Saturday 3 October turns the lawn over to Boa Viagem x Mira Rio, 14:00–23:00, with Budino, Dolce Vito, Mikolaï and Skinny Macho. Sunday 4 October is Burger Queens & Friends, celebrating three anniversaries with food pop-ups and music from Toribio, Megatronic and friends, 15:00–23:00. Sunday is free with RSVP.

WHO SAID CAPARICA WAS A SUMMER THING?

a very bombastic weekend is ahead.

This Saturday, @samgarrettmusic plays at @kala.caparica , a retreat hidden between forest and ocean that rarely appears on the public concert map. @mercado_atitudo begins a monthly Caparica chapter, while @quinta_mirario takes three days to end its first season.

Elsewhere, early music moves through five heritage spaces, the Convento dos Capuchos turns an 800-year anniversary into a full day, and @quinzenadedancadealmada fills theatres, screens, studios and gardens.

Six ways into the first weekend of October. Times, locations and access details are inside.

2–4 OCTOBER

SAM GARRETT AT KALĀ

THE ARTIST IS KNOWN.
THE VENUE IS THE DISCOVERY.

@samgarrettmusic has built a global audience with songs that move between acoustic folk, reggae and devotional music.

This Saturday, he brings a one-off public show to @kala.caparica , a retreat surrounded by forest and close to the ocean, where retreats are more usual than public concerts.

This is as much a chance to discover the address as the artist.

@mercado_atitudo has spent years gathering Portuguese makers, independent brands and small producers in Ericeira.

This weekend, it holds its first Costa da Caparica edition, bringing crafts, fashion, accessories, decoration and food to Largo 1.º de Maio.

The more interesting part begins after Sunday. This is planned as a new monthly date, returning on the first weekend of every month.

Not simply a market visiting town, but a new reason for the square to stay busy after summer.

For some time now, we’ve been trying to decide what the perfect picture of Caparica’s sweet side should look like.

Should we stick with the traditional favourites, or follow the newer bakeries and cafés that give us so many fresh reasons to leave room for dessert?

But Caparica and around has both, and that is the story.

It begins with perhaps the most Caparican sweet of all. The Claudino was created at Pastelaria Costa Nova in the 1980s from sugared puff pastry, baked until caramelised, with a light milk-based cream between the layers. When Costa Nova closed, its bakers brought the recipe to @o.capote_pastelaria. The pastelaria disappeared, but its sweet stayed, and if possible, even better.

The same street takes us to another familiar ritual. At @amerendeira.pt , arroz doce—rice cooked with milk, sugar and cinnamon—is still the ending that follows pão com chouriço from the wood-fired oven.

Then the timeline moves forward without leaving the classics behind.

@slow.sourdoughandco is exactly that bridge. One of the most beautiful bakeries we’ve stepped into, with an entirely vegan selection and a palmier that makes folded pastry and caramelised sugar feel like a new discovery.

At @hani.brunch.cafe the signature cake stacks thin layers carrying notes of honey and caramel with a tangy sour cream filling. At @burgerqueensofcaparica , white chocolate and matcha turn the cookie after the burger into a reason to visit in its own right.

This is this side of the river remembering and inventing at the same time.

What belongs at number six? Tell us what it is and where to find it.
