Travel Catalonia Beyond the Ordinary

Fall 2027 Editions Coming Soon

Some journeys stay with you forever—this is one of them. Led by Alba Sunyer, beloved Catalan author and culinary storyteller, this intimate experience offers a true, soulful taste of Catalunya.

Whether in the soft bloom of spring or the golden hush of fall, the Catalan countryside invites you to slow down. Vineyards glisten, olive trees sway, village life hums gently, and rustic kitchens fill with the scent of cherished family recipes. You’ll visit family-run farms and wineries, wander cobbled towns, and cook side by side with locals whose traditions live on through food and memory.

This isn’t a tour. It’s a heartfelt invitation to travel slowly, eat deeply—and badar: a Catalan verb we honor throughout this trip, to pause, observe, and let yourself wander with intention.

As J.R.R. Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost.”

We hope you’ll join us in 2027

Get ready to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime culinary adventure through Catalonia, led by Alba Sunyer, a true ambassador of Catalan cuisine. 🍷✨

Born in Barcelona, Alba's love for Catalan food was nurtured from an early age by her mother and further enriched by her in-law family's restaurant, El Turia, located in the heart of La Rambla in Barcelona. Though her career initially took her into physical therapy, an accident, fate led her back to her passion—bringing the flavors of Catalonia to the US.

After moving to the U.S. in 2008, Alba founded The Mediterranean Corner, a successful team-building company focused on Catalan cuisine experiences. Her influence grew, leading her to work with a Catalan culinary school as a International Department Director for the Culinary Programs. Author the bestselling book The Catalan Table, and collaborate with some of the world’s top chefs, including Ferran Adrià, Joan Roca, and José Andrés. 👏📚

Today, she teaches Catalan Cuisine History across the U.S., consults with chefs eager to embrace Catalan flavors. Alba leads #CatalanFood, a global movement promoting Catalan gastronomy. She represents the University of Barcelona - CETT 's Hospitality and Gastronomy programs in the US.

Join us as Alba takes you on a journey through the rich history, traditions, and flavors of Catalonia. This is more than a trip; it’s an experience you’ll cherish forever.

The Unexpected Catalonia

Catalonia has two historical territories: Catalunya Vella, Old Catalonia, and Catalunya Nova, New Catalonia.

In the north, Catalunya Vella encompasses the old counties north of the Llobregat River, including Barcelona, Girona, the Pyrenees, and much of central and coastal Catalonia. It is the Catalonia many visitors know: the Costa Brava, medieval towns, and mountain villages.

But head south, and another Catalonia unfolds.

Shaped by medieval expansion, Catalunya Nova stretches across Tarragona, the Terres de l’Ebre, and parts of Lleida. A land of Roman history, vineyards, olive groves, and agricultural traditions, it remains less explored.

Here, the Ebre River meets the Mediterranean in the spectacular Delta de l’Ebre. Rice fields stretch beneath the Serra del Montsià, flamingos gather in the lagoons, and the orange sunsets illuminate the oyster and mussel farms of Badia dels Alfacs and Badia del Fangar. These waters are also home to one of Catalonia’s culinary treasures: Balfegó bluefin tuna, prized for its exceptional quality and flavor.

In Tarragona, the Roman amphitheatre overlooks the sea. In El Serrallo, romesco tells the story of fishermen’s kitchens, while gamba roja is a treasure of these waters.

This is also the land of the Aplec del Cargol, one of Europe’s largest snail festivals. Reus, Gaudí’s birthplace, boasts remarkable Modernist architecture and is known as the capital of vermut. Perched above breathtaking cliffs, Siurana offers extraordinary views.

Its food tells stories of hard work and ingenuity. La clotxa, a traditional meal of farmers, olive pickers, and shepherds, brings together bread, vegetables, botifarra, and local olive oil. Carried in a sarró, it fueled long days outdoors.

Catalunya Nova is a land of landscapes, flavors, and stories waiting to be discovered.

Stay tuned for our Fall 2027 itinerary.

LONGER TABLES

Lately, the world feels like a difficult place to live. Wars, extreme climate events, and a growing divide between wealth and poverty. And we stand on the sidelines, immersed in our day to day, watching it all unfold, carrying the frustration of feeling that there is so little we can do.

My mother used to say : To help the world, you don’t need to go far, start by helping the people around you. She was a great example of what inclusion means: we all deserve a dignified life and a place to belong. From our small hometown of Sallent, the organization she led for more than 25 years helped families who had come from other countries, many fleeing war or hunger, as well as people in need from our own community. She fed their children, helped them find ways to pay their bills and find work, listened to them, understood their stories, and made them feel included and welcome.

But there are people who go further.

The incredible team at World Central Kitchen, who go where disaster strikes, where people are hungry and communities are struggling, bringing something as fundamental as a plate of food. They have created one of the most extraordinary humanitarian movements, proving that food is not only nourishment, but also dignity, comfort, community and a way of saying, "You are not alone."

From the Catalan Table, honoring our àvia Nuri from now on, a portion of the proceeds from our Catalonia Food & Wine trips will be donated to World Central Kitchen.

We believe that giving back is part of our responsibility to this world. A world that sometimes feels as though it belongs to a few but is home to all of us.

Discover Cadaqués: Catalonia’s Mediterranean Gem

Tucked between the mountains and the Mediterranean on the Cap de Creus peninsula, Cadaqués is one of Catalonia’s most enchanting coastal towns. Once a fishing village and later a haven for artists, its whitewashed houses, winding streets, and extraordinary light have inspired generations of creatives, including Salvador Dalí.

We’ll begin the day with a traditional esmorzar de forquilla—Catalonia’s iconic “fork breakfast,” featuring hearty dishes, pa de pagès amb tomàquet, and the tradition of drinking from a porró.

Then, discover Dalí’s world at Port Lligat, his coastal retreat, followed by the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres.

For lunch, we’ll gather at Compartir, where Alba and Chef Rubén’s longstanding relationship with the chefs opens the door to a truly special experience. Chef Mateu will welcome our group with personal hospitality and exclusive access to the restaurant’s culinary world. We’ll enjoy creative dishes inspired by the region, from the team behind Compartir and Disfrutar, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant named World’s Best Restaurant in 2024.

We’ll end the day at Hotel Peralada, nestled within the Castell de Peralada Resort and recognized with One MICHELIN Key for its exceptional hospitality and setting.

This is Catalonia through personal connections, exceptional chefs, and experiences beyond the ordinary.

Often overlooked by visitors to Catalonia, La Cerdanya is a mountain valley in the Pyrenees, right on the border with France, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including the dramatic Serra del Cadí.

On our journey, we’ll spend the day discovering this beautiful corner of Catalonia through its food and little villages. We’ll learn about Formatge del Tupí, a traditional Catalan spreadable cheese fermented with grape spirit, from a local artisan cheesemaker at Molí de Ger, where we’ll discover how this local specialty is made and enjoy a tasting of the cheeses that define the region’s flavors.

For lunch, we’ll taste trinxat de la Cerdanya, one of the valley’s most beloved traditional dishes, made with cabbage, potatoes, and pork belly.

Then, we’ll explore Puigcerdà, the charming capital of La Cerdanya, known for its historic center, stone houses, and beautiful mountain setting.

We’ll end the day at La Torre del Remei, a beautiful historic hotel surrounded by gardens and mountains, where we’ll slow down, enjoy the setting, and experience the character of the Cerdanya valley.
