NEVER BEFORE RELEASED 1983 DEMO - “Shut In/Shut Out” - Discovered in 2019 on a cassette labeled “NOTHING” - Now out on Numero!
In 1979, when I was 10 years old, my father introduced me to Eugenie Diserio and Steven Alexander. We started writing songs together for our bands, CHANDRA and later, The Chandra Dimension. Eugenie and Steven are exceptional artists and musicians. I was lucky to have them as my mentors. There is much more to say about all of this. But, for now - I am so happy to release, FOR THE FIRST TIME (43 years later), the final song the three of us ever wrote together. Chandra: Now on Numero

Who was the 10-year-old doing homework at band practice and ended up being sampled by The Avalanches decades later?

By the time she was 8, Chandra Oppenheim was already doing performance art in downtown New York alongside her father, conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim. A few years later, his friends Eugenie Diserio and Steven Alexander, members of Model Citizens and The Dance, decided they wanted to start a second project, and invited Chandra to front it as she had started writing songs at a young age.

In 1980, at just 10 years old, she recorded “Transportation,” a four-song EP that was equal parts mutant disco, post-punk, no wave, and art rock. The EP pairs Chandra’s juvenile unfiltered perspective with hypnotic basslines, off-kilter synths, and infectious grooves that was unlike anything else coming out of the scene.

Chandra stepped away from music at 14 to focus on school, but her work maintained a small yet dedicated cult following. It was regularly played on college and independent radio stations like WFMU, some songs were featured on compilations and “Kate” was in the soundtrack for the film “Teenage.” Then in 2016, her song “Subways” found a new audience after being sampled by The Avalanches, introducing one of New York’s most singular cult records to a new generation. The “Transportation” EP along with the unreleased track “Shut in/Shut out” is now streaming on Numero. by @thechandraband
