If you’re like me, you’ve been fixated on the #Clancy trial. But I started to see something troubling in the discourse that made me disengage.

People aren’t just making TikToks about the evidence anymore. They’re making fan edits. Clips from the trial are cut together and set to emotionally charged songs in the same visual language you’d expect to find in fanfic or celebrity stan circles.

Lindsay becomes the broken-down damsel in distress. Her attorney becomes the protective daddy figure swooping in to save her. Real people involved in the deaths of three children are being flattened into familiar character archetypes and repackaged as entertainment.

Something you may or may not know about me: I’m a writer. Like, that was my career and thing I got paid to do for real.

When I started Bridge & Tunnel Vintage, it was obviously because of my love of sourcing vintage clothes & accessories. And I love vintage because I love anything that has a good story that can transport me to another place & time, whether a visitor or reliving a memory.

B&T is a creative outlet for me. Slowly but surely it’s helped me start to write again. And it’s given me a perspective I never would have expected. It has showed me people have more than one life in them, too. More than one beginning. More than one version of themselves. More than one story worth telling.

So I started freelancing again. Pitching outlets is humbling, but fuck if the feeling of seeing your name on a byline isn’t still one of the greatest in the world. Not to say they all get sold, but I’m done letting that mean those pieces never get made. They’ll just live on my way too neglected Substack, and I hope you’ll check some of them out.

I may not be writing specifically about vintage, but when I do, I’ll def tie it into some bigger cultural observation.

Two years ago today, I launched Bridge & Tunnel Vintage. 🥹

I could lie and say I put a ton of thought and planning into it, but true to my chaotic ADHD nature, once I had the idea and the name, I went all the way in. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I knew I knew enough to figure it out.

There’s been a LOT of trial and error since then, but mostly, it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. And that’s in no small part because of the wonderful, weird little community I’ve become a part of here in Jersey City.

My dad was born and raised in JC, as was pretty much everyone on his side of my family. My grandmother lived on Rose Ave when I was little. And even when I was in my 20s and 30s bouncing around different neighborhoods in NYC and Brooklyn, I always knew I’d eventually end up back on the right side of the Hudson and call Jersey City home.

As some of you know, I lost my dad earlier this summer. And there’s been something incredibly comforting about being here, in the city he came from, surrounded and supported by so many people I met because of this weird little vintage business I started on a whim two years ago. It’s made navigating the grief a little more bearable.

What started as a creative outlet and a way to justify my “talent” for shopping somehow became so much more. It made me more involved in this city, not just as a vendor and small business owner, but as a resident. It gave me a community. And it gave me some really fucking wonderful friends.

All About Downtown was my very first pop-up with Bridge & Tunnel, so it’s become my de facto anniversary party. And I can’t think of a better place to celebrate two years.

Thank you to everyone who has bought something, stopped by a pop-up, shared a post, brought a friend, sold alongside me, hosted me, hyped me up, or just stood around my rack shooting the shit with me.

Two fucking years. 💜
