YOUR USERS DON'T NEED MORE FEATURES. THEY NEED LESS COMPLEXITY.

One of the easiest mistakes in product development is assuming that adding more features automatically makes a product better.

A new dashboard.
Another filter.
More settings.
One more step to accommodate a special use case.

Individually, each decision might make sense. But over time, they can turn a simple product into an exhausting experience.
Users have to think harder, navigate more screens, make more decisions, and work harder to accomplish what they came to do in the first place.

And that's a problem.

The goal of Product Design isn't to expose every capability. It's to help people accomplish their goals with less unnecessary effort.

So, how do we approach this?

1. Design around user goals, not feature requests.
When a stakeholder asks for a new feature, look beyond the request. What problem are they trying to solve? Could an existing workflow solve it more effectively?

2. Reduce cognitive load.
Not every option needs to be visible at once. Use progressive disclosure, sensible defaults, clear information hierarchy, and contextual actions to help users focus on what matters now.

3. Simplify workflows, not just screens.
A clean interface can still hide a complicated process. Examine the entire journey. Remove redundant steps, unnecessary decisions, repeated data entry, and avoidable handoffs.

4. Know when NOT to build.
Every feature has a cost beyond development time. It introduces maintenance, testing, documentation, edge cases, and more decisions for users.

Sometimes, the most valuable product decision is choosing not to add something.

5. Measure the impact of simplicity.
Look beyond visual feedback. Track task completion, time on task, drop-off rates, support requests, and user success. Simplification should produce meaningful improvements, not just fewer screens.

Here's the principle I keep coming back to:

Good design doesn't make complex systems look simple. It makes them easier to use.

The complexity may still exist behind the scenes. The user's experience doesn't need to carry all of it. by @thechris_effect

The scariest UX in banking isn’t bad UX. That’s just frustrating UX.
It’s misleading UX.

You send ₦500,000.

You hit Send

You see your balance go down.

And then the app tells you: Transaction failed
WHAT? 😲
What happened?
Did it fail? Did my account get debited? Did the recipient get paid? Should I hit send again? Will I be debited twice? Should I wait? Who should I reach out to?

…I skimmed through something my current program recently taught me, and bookmarked it:

Robust Error Handling.

Software fails. Networks fail. Databases fail. Services go down. Users input invalid data. Systems spit out unanticipated responses.

It’s not a matter of if these failures occur.

It’s a matter of:
What have we built for that moment when it does?

In banking & payments, I believe this concept goes beyond just UI problems with error messages.

It’s a Trust problem.
Good products don’t just tell you something went wrong.

They tell you:
What happened.
What didn’t happen.
What will happen now.

And most importantly,
What happened to my money?

That’s Product Design.
…and also the reason I’m finding myself extremely intrigued with what happens behind the interface lately.

Because designing for the happy path is easy.

Figuring out what you do when your system, user, or even network stops doing what you expect them to do?
That's where the real product thinking begins.
