Late last year, I tore a tendon in my ankle and spent months on a bike. My thinking is I have a good ten years of “grinding” to prove something (to myself). Art always pulls my time in another direction, as all disciplines require dedication. We’re all multifaceted, so it’s a shared experience. Although, what I enjoy about these individual sports is the transparent meritocracy. I’m happy to have found and made true friends, again by @thechrismarin

30th birthday was June 28th. Spent the evening at Manifest Gallery and a spontaneous hangout which shows the kindness of those around me. The next day I raced a 5k, the first in a decade, and you can’t forget the weather. I was quickly greeted into Cincinnatus Elite’s 30s club.

Feels like I’ve been the same guy since I was 17 with similar interests: art, music, martial arts, running, and a pursuit of meaning. I don’t know what that means. Currently in my physical prime, so I have to give it one last shot, but visual arts is another language altogether and not necessarily a meritocracy.
.
Joe came into town for a quick visit, and we even caught a fireworks show. Work got in the way, but we eventually ran 10 miles and ate a burger before saying goodbye. He honors me, too much, although who am I to say what my brother or anyone else should think? That’s been a repeated line of mine, “who am I to have this strong opinion?”

Post marathon life. Ran with a 104.4°F fever, and the recovery has been long.

Still oscillating between signing up for the half or full marathon. Glass half empty or half full, but you don’t have to decide on perspective if you just choose to fill the cup, huh? “Fatigue makes cowards of us all” and that’s what I’m afraid of finding out. When the going gets tough, you could cut me with a butter knife. (Those are Caamp lyrics.) Time to up the tempo and weights, gotta freak this heart rate. Back pain and the foam roller is ribbed for her pleasure.

I keep creating art around living and otherwise, what am I doing? Don’t know if it’s obvious, but I did receive The Happiness Hypothesis book and keep an interview of Shia LaBeouf on repeat. Shout out Adam for the book, as I assume this was your gift.

Lots to be happy about and lots to be sad about. “You say you love thunder showers, so what’s a few raindrops between friends? Love, Tai.” Started free styling over tracks to fulfill that promise of releasing a mixtape. Gonna need some auto-tuning!

Keep the tribe strong, so I call family pretty often. Grandma’ Cruz said, “John, you know your grandfather used to be the same way. He learned to have patience… you’re just not going to get your way.” She’s the only one who calls me by my middle name. I made her laugh with the Jewish hospital/restaurant joke I wrote. Told her how I wouldn’t trust “Mexican Hospital” because all they would do is rub an egg on you, give you some Vicks, Pepto, or expired prescription by @thechrismarin

Yuri Bezmenov, charcoal on paper, 42”x42”
It’s a modest nude, and filled with some punchlines all throughout. If you follow the repeated body of Tokischa, the letter “M” will reveal itself. This is meant to be the first of 3 works to spell out “mía”.
I titled it “Yuri Bezmenov” who was a Russian defective. He came out and spoke of Russian espionage to change American culture through academia and other forms of reeducation. I picked him to stick with my theme of mía / Mia / MIA (Missing in Action). The texts are punch lines from Danny Brown and Quelle Chris -

Wit’ their lips poked out like “Whatcha talkin’ ‘bout Willis?”

But I don’t fuck around no more, I’m celibate

You was Kim K’in, flaunting your new Black friends

My new name colonizers can’t pronounce

Sub Rosa, charcoal on paper, 84”x84”
I kept thinking, well I was thinking about a lot of things, but I want to go back to an interview with Heems, Himanshu Kumar Siri. Ali Shaheed Muhammad asked him, “is the song ‘Home (feat. Dev Hynes)’ not just a break up song in the romantic sense, but also a break up song in the social political sense, that is with the land?”
In the interview, Heems also points out the relationship between the Middle East and Hip Hop, the idea of having a rap name after a terrorist, calling your city Chiraq, and how Thuggee turned into thug. From memory I recall him saying, “the way they treat Black and Brown people here is the way they treat Brown people globally.”
Not just talking about the US-Mexican border but also what’s going on in Israel, Gaza, Palestine, it all. What is heartbreak? Lowest common denominator, we know where we stand, in death, and yet what happens internally when you look like those or once looked like the children who are dying? Yeah, there are more points to be made.
At the bottom left hand corner is a childhood photo of me and my siblings, and in the upper right hand corner is an imagined heaven, Rinconcito en el Cielo. From life to death, that’s Sub Rosa, that’s what’s said in secret.
All imagery deals with the hand, from the softest touch to violence.
