There is something sacred about matching Black skin correctly.
For so long, the makeup industry treated deeper complexions like an afterthought — limited shades, wrong undertones, formulas that turned grey, red, or flat under light. But Black skin is not one-dimensional. It is golden, red, olive, neutral, blue-based, warm honey, rich espresso, deep cool mahogany. It shifts in different lighting. It carries history. It carries glow.
As a makeup artist and beauty professional of color, shade matching is not just technical for me — it’s personal.
When I match a Black or brown woman perfectly, I’m not just applying foundation. I’m honoring undertone. I’m protecting radiance. I’m refusing the narrative that we have to look “lighter,” “brighter,” or overly contoured to be seen. True luxury is when the skin looks untouched… but perfected.
