99 Oscar snubs. 97 days until nomination morning. The 99th Oscars. 🏆

Jake Gyllenhaal makes Lou Bloom so unsettling that even his smile feels rehearsed. NIGHTCRAWLER is some of his best work, and somehow the Academy couldn’t find him a spot.

We don’t appreciate this man enough. Would he have been your Best Actor winner?

99 Oscar snubs. 98 days until nomination morning. The 99th Oscars. 🏆

Lupita Nyong’o gave us TWO incredible performances in US, and somehow neither got her an Oscar nomination. This dual role is insane work.

Would she have been your Best Actress winner?

99 Oscar snubs. 99 days. The 99th Oscars. 🏆

We’re kicking off the countdown to nomination morning with Toni Collette in HEREDITARY. This one still pisses me off.

One of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and somehow no nomination. Would she have been your winner?

Our No. 4 TIFF film is Coward, Lukas Dhont’s World War I drama about two Belgian soldiers who find connection through a front-line theater troupe. We loved the queer romance at its center and the performances by Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne.

Coward opens in limited U.S. theaters December 25.

Misty Green may be messy, but Rosalind Eleazar is undeniable.

Chris Rock’s Hollywood satire gives her a complicated, self-destructive character to play, and she completely commands the movie.

This feels like a true breakout performance.

NAZA is one of the most gut-wrenching documentaries I’ve seen this year.

Through anonymous testimony from Israeli soldiers and intelligence officers, it examines surveillance, targeting, civilian deaths, and the human cost of blind obedience.

A devastating film that’s hard to shake.

Ten years later, Moonlight still hits just as hard, but what surprised me most on this rewatch was how differently I connected with the final chapter.

I used to think the third act was the weakest part of the film. Now, it might be the part I understand the most.

Barry Jenkins tells Chiron’s story with so much tenderness and restraint, and from Mahershala Ali’s Oscar-winning performance to Nicholas Britell’s score and James Laxton’s cinematography, every piece of this film still feels extraordinary.

One of the greatest Best Picture winners of this century. And God, I miss Barry Jenkins’ cinematic touch.

The Social Reckoning is not The Social Network 2. And honestly, the sooner you stop expecting it to be, the better the movie becomes.

It doesn’t have Fincher behind the camera or that legendary Reznor and Ross score, but Aaron Sorkin still has something worth saying here.

Instead of another Mark Zuckerberg character study, this is an investigative journalism story about what Facebook became, what the company knew about the harm its platform could cause, and what happened when engagement and revenue became the priority.

It’s imperfect, occasionally over-explained, and Jeremy Strong’s Zuckerberg gets VERY mannered. But this ended up being much stronger than I expected, and unfortunately, its story about misinformation feels as timely as ever.

What if the thing you fall in love with about someone eventually becomes the thing that frustrates you most?

That’s something I asked Charlie Harper co-director Mac Eldridge about, especially in the way Harper’s perception of Charlie changes over the course of their relationship.

His answer gets right to the heart of what I think the film does so well: sometimes the person doesn’t completely change. The way we see them does.

Full conversation with Mac Eldridge is out now on The Cinephile Mind. Charlie Harper now playing in select theaters.

There have been plenty of giant snake movies, but Mike P. Nelson wanted BEWARE BOIÚNA to have something more on its mind.

I asked him how important it was to make a creature feature that still delivers the thrills, while also giving the story and mythology behind the Boiúna real weight. Now in theaters.
