Instructors, let's have a quick chat about our words and communicating movement. What do you really mean when you say (or hear) "Squeeze your butt"?! The words we choose to describe movement and engagement in the circus classroom matter more than we think! What comes to mind for you? 🍑 Buns of steel 🍑 Holding "it" in 🍑 Brace for impact 🍑 Create hip extension 🍑 Tuck the tailbone What else?? Whart did you really mean? What is the action you want those words to create? #thecircusdoc #aerialarts #circusarts #acrobat #handstand by @thecircusdoc

Circus Nerds, spooky season is here, and so is performance season! 🎪🎃 October kicks off the Halloween shows and carries right through the holidays. In the circus clinic, that means we’re helping our professional performers and first-time recreational artists keep their bodies happy and healthy so they can make it through the season as smoothly as possible. Some folks come in needing to get back on stage this week, tonight, or tomorrow if possible. Sometimes we have to break a few hearts, but usually we’re able to help people make it through. Wishing you all the best this spooky season. Stay safe out there and have fun! #thecircusdoc #CircusClinic #CircusArts #AerialArts #CircusMedicine by @thecircusdoc
Calling all nerdy circus friends! I’m heading to Dissecting Aerial Symposium this November in London, and I am SO excited! Hosted by my friends at @gravitylevity, this event is pure artistic inspiration meets circus science. Think aerial artists, researchers, body workers and medical & sports science practitioners all in one room for a proper deep dive into the body in the air. One day. Three sessions. Pick your adventure: 🎟️ The Intimate One 🎟️ The Practical One 🎟️ The Big One Book whichever one(s) call to you (or go all in!) Which talks I’m especially looking forward to? 👉🏼 Dr Nicky Keay on hormones and training 👉🏼 Dr Jessica Eccles on hypermobility and neurodivergence 👉🏼 Suki McConnon on Relative Energy Deficiency in Dance These are going to be right up my alley and I may be a little biased… do you recognize some of these names?? At The Circus Doc we have been lucky to have Drs. Nicky Keay and Jessica Eccles present as a part of our Circus Smart Speaker Series! I can’t wait to hear their updates. 📍 Jacksons Lane, London 📆 Saturday 7th November 🎥 Recordings of each session go live from 12th November, so you can catch it all from anywhere in the world! 🎉 Final week, final chapter! Chapter 9 is all about getting strong AND mobile. It’s packed with exercises for circus artists that you can use as stand-alone drills, in your class warm-ups or on conditioning days. For every exercise, I break down: ✅ Why the drill matters ✅ Proper technique ✅ Muscles involved ✅ Common errors ✅ Variations to try So get ready to sweat, and put your own body (or your students’) to work! Try them out and let me know how they go. I’d love to see you in action, so tag me in your photos and videos! Questions about a drill? Drop them below. #thecircusdoc #aerialist #circusartist #poleinstructor #aerialinstructor by @thecircusdoc
Circus students have schools and classes to help them improve. But where do instructors go to get better? Circus has less standardized instructor education than sports like gymnastics, so finding quality training can be a challenge. And when we look to other sports, art forms, and science to guide our training and practice we can see how different the demands of circus are. If you teach, share your favorite teaching insight in the comments. Let's learn from each other! And if you're ready to go deeper, my Instructor Boost course is built for instructors like you. We'll touch on everything from how artists approach their training and their body, what training should look like, what flexibility is "normal", how (and when) artists present with injuries, what the most common injuries are, and what to assess in circus skills on the ground and in the air to keep artists safe. So you can teach with more confidence and keep your students safe and progressing. Comment “Boost Me” and I’ll send you more details and the link to register. #thecircusdoc #circusinstructor #aerialinstructor #poleinstructor #acrobat by @thecircusdoc
Circus instruction hot take: I don't think we should casually use muscle names in recreational classes. Yes, I teach anatomy, and yes, that might be the last thing you expected me to say. But ask yourself: 👀 Do your students know what that muscle does? 👀 Do they know where it is in their body? 👀 Do they know what it feels like when it’s firing? If not, what are we actually saying to them? This isn’t about knowing less. You should know the muscle, how it works and the goal of the skill so well that you have many ways to cue it. That’s what lets you communicate in a way your students can actually feel and use. This is exactly the circus-specific teaching we cover in my Instructor Boost course. Need this kind of insight in your classes and class planning? Comment “BOOST ME” and I’ll send you the link for details and to enroll! 🚀 Instructors, stop piecing it together. Start teaching with confidence backed by circus science. #thecircusdoc #aerialinstructor #circusinstructor #circusscience #circusschool by @thecircusdoc
Instructors & aspiring instructors, where are you getting your insights? 👀 Do you have sources you know are truly science based (and not just repackaged AI)? Or be honest, are you like many of us and following every tumbling, acro, aerial, pole, gymnastics, yoga and fitness page you come across and saving every video and carousel... then watching them vanish into the abyss of your saved folder while you try to piece together coaching tips, drills and science from a hundred different places? The information overload and overwhelm ends now. Stop searching. Stop guessing. Get solid science based, proven knowledge, and all of your questions deeply considered and answered with the detail you need. Get boosted with me. Instructor Boost doors are open and it’s time to go back to school circus style! This course gives you circus specific knowledge so that you can work more efficiently with circus bodies, and see your students succeed more easily. Don’t waste time figuring it out alone, join this cohort of amazing instructors and learn what I’ve developed over decades of circus and clinical experience. Stand on my shoulders and let’s all reach higher! Who is this course for? Instructors of all disciplines and experience levels (and maybe even some super nerdy circus artists). Got questions? Let me know. Does this sound like you? IADMS is always a blast, but this year with the conference in Australia and the strong pole community there, we had quite the group of incredible clinicians and students who work with pole artists, circus artists, and dancers who incorporate aerial and acrobatics into their work.  I was thrilled to finally connect in three dimensions with folks whom I had been exchanging emails and zoom calls with, some for almost 10 years! There is just nothing that replaces face to face time over coffee (it is a very big thing in Melbourne) or a meal.  There was much knowledge shared in the formal presentations and workshops, but even more in the conversations between sessions and in the networking that will lead to new possibilities in the future.
So thankful for the experience and new connections. Can’t wait to do it again! #iadams #movementscience #dancescience #CircusScience #thecircusdoc by @thecircusdoc
