A mess that organizes chaos into performance.

Where nothing is planned, yet everything finds its shape

To lose control before you can trust it again

Is to let the mask lead before you understand it

The moments where nothing goes as rehearsed

Is where a character starts finding its own voice

To turn confusion into discovery

The kind of magic no script could have written taken in The Commedia School by @thecommediaschool

I often say that I am a space maker. I create the space for theatre to happen.

I do this in many ways: as an instructor, a performer, a festival organiser, and perhaps most importantly, as a theatre teacher.

For me, teaching theatre is about creating a frame in which students can learn the basic technical skills of the craft. Theatre is craftsmanship. We need tools, techniques and a certain discipline.

But that is only one part of it.

The other part is creating the right conditions for discovery. I want to create a space where students feel free to explore, to take risks, to surprise themselves and to discover something they did not know was there.

That’s why, at the end of an improvisation, we at The Commedia School often ask.

“What did you discover?”

Because we believe that theatre education should make room for the big aha — those moments when something suddenly becomes clear, when a student experiences something rather than simply being told about it.

My role as a teacher is therefore not simply to demonstrate or transmit knowledge. It is to create the frame, the conditions and the invitation for discovery to happen.

I teach the craft, but I also try to protect the space where something unexpected can emerge.

That, for me, is where theatre begins.

Masterclass with Ole Brekke
Movement Theatre • Commedia • Physical Storytelling

We invite you to a very special Masterclass with Ole Brekke, founder and master teacher of the Commedia School.

As part of an upcoming documentary about the Commedia School and Ole Brekke’s work, we are gathering students, performers, and theatre enthusiasts for a unique day of movement, play, and physical theatre. During the workshop, we will also film parts of the day for the documentary and have the opportunity to ask participants about their experiences. There will, of course, also be time for you to ask Ole your own questions.

A day of movement, play and discovery

This movement-theatre workshop offers an opportunity to revisit and deepen some of the exercises you may have encountered before — this time with a new perspective, curiosity, and a playful physical approach to theatre.

Ole will share exercises and principles from the Commedia School tradition, focusing on spontaneity, creativity, presence, and the physical relationship between performer and audience.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore:

Improvisation
Voice projection
Body movement
Spatial awareness
Physical storytelling
Spontaneity and play

The workshop is about discovering how much can happen when we allow the body to lead, stay curious, and respond to what is happening in the moment.

Discover new possibilities. Surprise the audience — and perhaps even yourself — as you explore your true presence on stage.

Come move, play, learn, and share a special day with Ole Brekke while becoming part of the story of the Commedia School.

The workshop is free of charge. If you feel inspired to support the documentary project, voluntary donations are warmly welcomed and will go directly towards the production. by @thecommediaschool

The clown doesn’t come alive in a classroom. It comes alive in front of people.

That’s why at the end of the clown module, we get our students performing for real audiences, not just their classmates. Something shifts when they do — they start finding out who their clown actually is and what it does to a room.

We try to keep that going after graduation too, helping former students find places to perform through our partners.

This year some of our clowns did walkabouts at Vanløse Torv for Kultour, the local Open Culture Day — just out there clowning for whoever walked by, no idea what was coming.

“Buffoon’lar deliliğin bir parçasıdır – gerçeği kurtarmak için gerekli olan deliliğin.”

— Jacques Lecoq

Geçtiğimiz yıl İstanbul ve Ankara’daki atölyelere gösterilen yoğun ilginin ardından, The Commedia School sanat yönetmeni Ruth Lerche, 3–4 Ekim 2026 tarihlerinde yeniden İstanbul’a geliyor!

An amazing new production of TOMMELISE, Thumbelina, just premiered with Nørregaards Teater in Odense, Denmark, and it featured two artists very close to our hearts: Dirck Backer and Maria Myrgård.

This stunning puppet production brought H. C. Andersen’s tale to life with music, magic, and an incredible four-person ensemble.

Dirck and Maria are former students of The Commedia School, where they walked through our doors forty-two years ago. Our school celebrates fifty years of history this year, and over the past four decades these two artists have brought joy to audiences across several countries, including Canada.

Former students are still out there, decades later, creating beauty and touching lives. We could not be prouder.
