Upcoming exhibition / Lawrence Abu Hamdan – ‘Zifzafa’ In August, we presents our second project with Lawrence Abu Hamdan (@lawrenceabuhamdan), ‘Zifzafa’ (2024), which will be exhibited for the first time in the UK in collaboration with Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) Through his practice of “forensic listening”, artist, sound investigator and founder of Earshot.ngo Lawrence Abu Hamdan creates performance, sound and video works that explore the political force of sonic experience. ‘Zifzafa’ is Abu Hamdan’s recent body of work comprising of a multichannel audiovisual installation, performance and video game which demonstrates the effects of noise pollution and green colonialism activities in the Israeli occupied Syrian Golan Heights. ‘Zifzafa’ is an archaic and sonorous word borrowed from Arabic poetry describing a wind that shakes and rattles everything in its path. Abu Hamdan’s audio investigation contests the proposed construction of 31 of the world’s largest land-based wind turbines in the last remaining open space for Jawlani Syrians who since 1967 have faced continuous acts of expropriation and dispossession. Lawrence Abu Hamdan – Artist Talk + Exhibition LaunchTo mark the launch his solo exhibition ‘Zifzafa’ at The Common Guild next month, Lawrence Abu Hamdan (@lawrenceabuhamdan) will discuss the installation and the collaborative research processes that contributed to the exhibition during an artist’s talk in our Library.Self-described as the ‘Private Ear’, Abu Hamdan has over a decade of experience investigating audio on behalf of people under attack from state authorities. He has a doctorate from the University of London on the role of sound in legal investigations, and his investigative work has been used as evidence at the UK Asylum and Immigration Tribunal and in a formal request to the International Criminal Court. In 2023 he founded Earshot (@earshot.ngo) the world’s first not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the study of audio for human rights and environmental advocacy.The talk will be followed by a late opening of ‘Zifzafa’ from 7–8.30pm.The both the talk and the late opening are free, however we recommend pre-booking for the talk to ensure a place. Opening this weekend – Anne Hardy at Talbot Rice Gallery Artist and TCG board member Anne Hardy (@anne__hardy) opens her new show at Talbot Rice Gallery (@talbotricegallery) this weekend featuring a major new installation entitled ‘Feelings’. Known for her pioneering approach to exhibition-making, Hardy treats the iconic gallery space as a found object, extending the influence of sculpture into the fabric of the gallery through light, sound, data and scenography, creating an active environment for a series of sculptural “beings”. Hardy transformed our former home at 21 Woodlands Terrace back in summer 2015 with her first exhibition in Scotland, ‘TWIN FIELDS’. Tomorrow, join us for our upcoming event with Shanghai-based curator and writer Sam Shiyi Qian (@sisyphusam) who will speak about her practice as part of our Detours series. Qian, who is curator at the Rockbund Art Museum (@rockbundartmuseum) in Shanghai explores historiography, knowledge production, and environmental media through her wide-ranging curatorial work. Rockbund Art Museum and The Common Guild collaborated to co-commission Peng Zuqiang’s (@pengzuqiang) film installation ‘Afternoon Hearsay’ (2025), which was presented in Glasgow and Shanghai in 2025.
