My dad has Alzheimer’s…in the beginning of phase 7.
On Saturday, I started my day with a bucket list item: doing my yoga practice on the ocean sand with waves crashing in the background. What followed was one of the hardest days of this alz journey with my dad - to date. He’s lived with me and my fam for 8 years so that’s saying something I think. 💭 But, in a way, yesterday was also just like any other day…hard hard journey, but also glorious moments of joy intertwined like that glimmer of light I had on the beach. How ironic that my sibs and I can say “this journey is so hard added on to everything else in my life” and “everything else in my life is helping me get through this journey,” All in one breath!

Choosing daily to move our bodies (for me that’s yoga and the bike), engage in our work, meeting up with friends for a drink and laughs, snuggling our kids and spending time with our partners/spouses, have been the “living glimmers” that walk with us through the slow death of our father. (Plus a whole lot of support from @anniesp58 and our support group. ❤️) This is not the full on end for him today…this post isn’t to say goodbye (we’ve been saying goodbye every day in new ways for the past 10 years.) No, it’s not a goodbye post, it’s just a post…I’ve been pretty much silent on my page for a few years now…posting about my life is last on my mind lately…but I’m still living it…and the grief in phase 7 feels like a weighted blanket that I carry with me throughout the days. Not to mention what’s happening in the world and our country right now…add another weighted blanket, and another…

I share this because I am beyond grateful for those glimmer moments in the day, or as our support group calls them, nuggets…and to say, if you’re carrying around weighted blankets too…don’t forget to take it off if even just for a moment to breathe, to connect with someone who loves you, and don’t you dare feel bad on the days you need to vent or live in the sadness for a bit. We got this! ❤️
