Invited a friend over for dinner and she ghosted me. Not my loss, but that's why there are two steaks (I seasoned them this morning to prep for grilling them tonight). 🤤

My dog Fezzik crossed the rainbow bridge Saturday night. I was at the One Voice Awards when my wonderful neighbor Ramses, who was feeding him and taking him for walks while I was gone, called me to let me know.

I am glad he called me immediately. I definitely wanted to know. I am also *very* good at compartmentalizing my emotions when I need to. I made it through the rest of the awards ceremony, hung out for a little bit afterward, and then went back up to my room and broke down.

Sunday, I held it together pretty well throughout the day and started tearing up on final approach to SFO. Pulled myself back together enough to get to my car, drive home and grab some food from the supermarket, and make it through my front door before I completely lost it.

Fez came to me back in 2013 and was gracious enough to accompany me through some of the absolute worst parts of my life. Adopted him from a rescue shelter in South Carolina, he journeyed with me back to California from Georgia and acquired his affinity for McDonald's Fries on the three day cross country drive.

He was my constant companion through my divorce, through COVID, through the loss of my father, through the worst financial challenge I've ever been through (and am still pulling myself out of)... he's always been my shadow and my companion. A snuggle buddy when I've needed one, and a fellow foodie (who definitely got his fair share of gourmet treats for always being the goodest boy).

The past year or so he has had his own troubles: congestive heart failure, a persistent cough, and more recently some intermittent but pretty harsh seizures.

I can't say it's altogether unexpected that his time came. But I am absolutely gutted that I wasn't able to be home with him at the end.

When he was adopted we already had two cats, Westley and Buttercup. Fezzik was smaller than both of them, so he got his name as kind of an ironic tongue-in-cheek Princess Bride reference joke. But like Andre the Giant, he was a gentle heartwarming character.

He was my first dog and he was truly the most wonderful parts of the last 13 years of my life. To say I'm slightly broken would be an understatement.

Rotisserie Chicken (roasted at home on the grill), some leftover white rice, and perfectly cooked Brussels Sprouts. This is the best way to spend a Sunday evening.
