The Sound of a Vanishing World

What does biodiversity loss sound like?

Increasingly, it sounds like silence.

A powerful reconstruction by The Guardian compares the sound of the English countryside 50 years ago with today. The difference is striking. The rich chorus of birds that once filled spring mornings has faded, replaced by longer stretches of quiet.

This is more than nostalgia. It is a warning.

Since the 1970s, the UK has lost an estimated 73 million wild birds, reflecting pressures from habitat loss, intensive agriculture, pollution, climate change and other human impacts.

Scientists use ecoacoustics to study natural soundscapes and understand ecosystem health. A healthy ecosystem is not only something we see. It is something we hear.

There is another concern: shifting baseline syndrome. Each generation can grow up accepting a quieter, less biodiverse world as normal, without realizing what has disappeared.

Protecting biodiversity means protecting the relationships that support pollination, fertile soils, freshwater, climate regulation and human well-being.

Nature speaks through birds, insects, rivers and forests.

If those voices continue to disappear, silence could become one of the clearest signals of ecological decline.

The future of sustainability is not only about reducing emissions.

It is also about ensuring the natural world still has something to say.

Sometimes, extinction isn't something we see first.

It's something we stop hearing
