Former KPBS news director Terence Shepherd, who was fired from the company in February, is suing the public media organization, alleging he was wrongfully removed after disclosing information about a KPBS reporter potentially violating Federal Communications Commission regulations.

During live coverage of a protest, reporter Alexander Nguyen recorded a stand-up that featured a sign reading “F-— ICE,” in the background, according to the lawsuit. Nguyen and KPBS declined to comment.

Vinnee Tong, also the managing editor at KPBS, has been the acting news director since Shepherd’s firing.

The Daily Aztec will continue to monitor the case as it progresses.

San Diego got to taste some World Cup action on June 6 as Snapdragon Stadium played host to Switzerland and Australia in the first of two World Cup Friendly matches in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup. The 1-1 draw between the two teams marked the final stop before the real action starts.

Last year, The Daily Aztec reported that SDSU spent over $1.3 million to upgrade the university’s extensive network of surveillance cameras with new ones that could deploy artificial intelligence to detect and predict behaviors, track movements and deploy facial recognition.

Further analysis conducted by SDSU’s investigative journalism students shows how extensive the web of surveillance cameras is around campus.

San Diego State men’s golf missed out on its first Mountain West Championship since the 2020-21, which was the last opportunity they had at that title before moving into the Pac-12 next season. Their third-place finish snapped a league-tying record of four consecutive conference trophies.

However, that setback might play into their favor.

The last time the Aztecs didn’t win the Mountain West, they fought their way into the NCAA Championship which is the last time they’ve qualified for the national tournament. SDSU enters the NCAA Marana Regional with a chip on their shoulder, looking to end their five-year drought.

“You can’t have a year where you miss them both. That would suck,” said sophomore Harry Takis.
