Life uh…finds a way

That’s how I felt walking through the winding corridors of these small Italian communities. Things built on top of other things. Archways that must have served some important purpose jutting out of the walls and keeping the picturesque town of pastel colors just through the passageway for scenes like this one.

Fairy Tale Setting

This is a shot of Portofino’s busy harbor town center and port with the Castello Brown (Castle Brown) on the hill overlooking it. There has been a defensive military structure where Castello Brown currently sits since at least the 4th Century AD which is pretty cool.

Looking at this scene it reminds me of fairy tale settings like in Pixar movies or even picture books for kids and then I realize it is because those pieces of art & media took their inspiration from towns like these, not the other way around. I guess growing up in North America where there hasn’t been millennia of on and off wars over resources and of raiding and piracy and other such aggression made the way they developed and built their towns and cities totally different from the modern age. It’s probably so normal to the average European too, they don’t even notice it because of course that’s what towns and cities look like and of course there’s an old fort that’s been there in one shape or another for hundreds and hundreds of years. It’s such an interesting perspective shift, I quite enjoy it

History Isn't Always Easy To Access

"Hannibal's Bridge" in Rapallo, Italy Which May Not Have Anything To Do With The Carthaginian General Hannibal Of the Second Punic War (2nd Century BCE) But Almost Certainly Dates Back To Roman Imperial Times

This overgrown, out of use, ancient bridge is first mentioned in a document from the 11th Century which discusses land near the bridge so it was already a landmark by then. Who knows how long it's been here. Crazy to think of all the various people who walked over this bridge over the thousands of years it's been where it is. It's not in use any longer because in the 19th Century they diverted the creek the bridge went over so they could build the "Corso Cristoforo Colombo" thoroughfare which now passes underneath the closed off bridge. I'm assuming before they let that moss grow it was all cobblestones like the few that still show through

Made for a cool photo though!

Oratorio di Sant'Erasmo - The Oratory of Saint Erasmo

The structure dates back to the 14th century but has had multiple remodels over the centuries. It was rebuilt in the 17th Century in the baroque architectural style.

I always appreciate the symmetry of grand buildings. Instagram didn’t let me put the full wide one so I’ll pop it in my Story 😃

Switchback of Via San Sebastiano Coming Down The Mountain Into Portofino’s Main Square & Harbor with the Lombard Romanesque style architecture wall of the Chiesa del Divo Martino on the right hand side

These hairpin switchbacks are necessary to get down the steep incline of the Ligurian mountains along the Ligurian coast. They also make for some picturesque scenes which works out super well for me because I got to take these photos to share with you all 😁

Looking Out At The Arno River which runs through Pisa, Italy & out towards the sea with the “Torre Guelfa” (Guelph Tower) & the Cittadella Vecchia over on the right hand side of the photo.

The Citadel was originally built in the 13th Century & the Tower was originally built in the mid-Fifteenth Century, both were destroyed during WWII either due to being mined by the retreating Nazis in July 1944 OR completely destroyed by the Allied bombings in 1944. I wouldn’t be surprised if both are true as the Italian Wikipedia entry that I auto-translated to English in my browser says both of those stories in different parts of the article 🤷‍♂️

Either way, it was rebuilt in 1956 but for some reason they did the rebuild not completely maintaining its original appearance. Maybe they couldn’t? Maybe because it didn’t serve its original function anymore by then? It was built originally as a defensive measure in part to be able to watch the sea which is just down river. Probably for any “Saracen” Pirates - this is also why they built Italian cities away from the coasts by the way - pirates.

History is complicated and complex and not always transmitted accurately. As one can see 😅. WWII wasn’t even 100 years ago and we don’t accurately know the story of how those ancient structures got destroyed. I guess it doesn’t really matter because they for rebuilt and “soon” the rebuild will just be part of the story that people learn about happening in a time long before the person or even their grandparents were born. We’re not even that far away from that time!

Lining Up To See The Sights & Sites

Love the results of using the iPhone wide angle lens for panoramic shots of really large scenes like this one from the Piazza del Duomo in Firenze, Italia (aka Florence, Italy) when I was there back in April. If you look in the background on the left hand side of the shot you can also see the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore which we didn’t go visit but from my Google searches seems to be a museum. Sort of wish we had gone in hindsight now!

Special thanks to my brother who stood and held our spot in this huge line while I went to go take this and other photos.

Throwback Thursday and I’m back to sharing more Italy photos from my trip. Yeah, I still have lots of photos from my trip to share 😁. I hope people are still enjoying them as much as I enjoy sharing them with everyone 🤠

Dusty Shadows In The Smoky, Sunny Skies

I took this one last week when the skies and air were full of smoke and dust from the wildfires in Quebec & northern Ontario. I thought it was really interesting how the plane caused a shadow in the otherwise seemingly clear sky as it flew through the haze filling the air

Religious Lines & Spiritual Curves & Shapes of Faith

Another photo of the elaborate and highly ornate architecture of the inside of the Basilica di Santa Margherita di Antiochia in Santa Margherita Ligure, Genova, Italy

I enjoyed the way the sun light comes in to fill the air below it with this aura of light & brightness. I'm guessing that's what the architects were going for when they designed the roof & ceiling of the basilica though they probably would have hoped for a more religious inspiration than their work succeeded in achieving within me 😅
