Abusers love to play the victim when they’re finally held accountable. They’ll try to twist the narrative to make you look like the problem, but don’t let them gaslight you into silence. Standing up for yourself is not persecution.

One of the most frustrating parts of holding abusers accountable is how quickly they flip the script and claim they’re being persecuted. They’ll act shocked, offended, and hurt that you would “attack” them, all while completely ignoring the pain they caused you and others. It’s a manipulation tactic designed to make you feel guilty for finally speaking up.

But holding someone accountable is not persecution. It’s not cruelty or vengeance. It’s a necessary step in healing and reclaiming your voice. The truth is, abusers rely on your silence. They thrive when you doubt yourself and question whether you’re being “too harsh” or “unforgiving.” But you’re not wrong for demanding honesty and transparency. You’re not wrong for choosing your well-being over their comfort.

Healing means breaking the cycle of enabling bad behavior and confronting the uncomfortable truths that people would rather keep hidden. It means being brave enough to stand in your truth, even when it’s met with backlash.

What most people don’t understand about healing after leaving a high-control religion is that the body keeps score. Years of suppression, humiliation, and fear don’t just disappear the moment someone walks away.

At first, it may feel like everything is getting worse—anxiety, deep depression, panic attacks that seem to come out of nowhere. But this isn’t a setback. It’s the body FINALLY FEELING SAFE enough to process what wasn’t allowed before‼️

All the moments of embarrassment, the silent rage swallowed after being belittled by leadership, the pain of being controlled and gaslit—it had to go somewhere. And when the nervous system is no longer in survival mode, it releases everything that was once locked inside.

People who haven’t experienced this may not understand. They think leaving should bring immediate relief and many mistake emotional turbulence for regret. But this is what healing actually looks like—messy and painful, but also profound, liberating, and deeply transformative.

To those in this stage: Nothing is wrong with you. Your body is doing exactly what it needs to do. Keep going.
