The very first official English Dragon Ball Z card game released in the United States was **Ani-Mayhem**, specifically the **Dragon Ball Z expansion (Set 2)**, released in **1997**.

While many fans associate the start of DBZ cards with the popular Score Entertainment CCG (which launched later in 2000), Ani-Mayhem holds the title for being the pioneer. 🔑 Key Facts about Ani-Mayhem:
* **Release Year:** 1997
* **Publisher:** Upper Deck (produced by Pioneer Animation, now Geneon).
* **The Format:** It was originally a multi-series game featuring shows like *Tenchi Muyo!* and *Ranma ½*, but the final set was dedicated entirely to *Dragon Ball Z*.
* **The Content:** The cards used high-quality screen captures from the anime, specifically covering the early sagas.
* **Legacy:** It is famous for its **5 Ultra Rare foils** (Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Goten, Super Saiyan Trunks, Future Trunks, and Shenlong) which remain highly sought after by vintage collectors today.

⏳ The Successors
If you remember a different game, it might be one of these:
1. **Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game (Score CCG):** Released in **2000**, this is the game that truly exploded in popularity in the U.S., featuring the "Saiyan Saga"”and the iconic “Personality cards”
2. **Dragon Ball Collectible Card Game (Bandai):** A later attempt released in **2008**.
3. **Dragon Ball Super Card Game:** The current modern game, which began in **2017**. by @thedbzdad

The 1998 JPP/Amada Dragon Ball Z cards are officially known as the Artbox - JPP/Amada Dragon Ball Z series

If you collected in the late 90s, you definitely remember these gold-bordered beauties.

❓ WHAT ARE THEY?
These Japanese-made, licensed trading cards (produced by Amada and imported for the English market by Artbox) were widely distributed in the USA and are especially known for their distinct gold foil chases.

❓ HOW MANY CARDS ARE IN THE SET?
• Series 1 (Saiyan Saga): 60 base cards featuring gold foil names.
• Series 2 (Frieza Saga): 72 base cards featuring heavier gilded foil frames.

👇 Drop a comment: Did you own any of these back in the day? Who was your favorite pull? Big shoutout to my guy @darkmatterthieves for making it possible.
